TOM'S TAKE

"There is a better chance of you ending up at Ohio State than DJ Jacobs."

That is what a source recently told me about 247Sports' top prospect. There are connected sources around this recruitment who remain shocked by Jacobs' initial commitment to the Buckeyes. Most had him pegged for Miami and continue to be surprised he didn't end up with the Hurricanes. In addition, those same sources still believe he'll eventually find his way to Coral Gables.

That said, Ohio State sources remain confident that Jacobs will eventually put pen to paper with the Buckeyes. They believe the effort and energy put forth leading up to Jacobs' initial decision was the point where they cemented themselves as the team to beat, which remains the case today. While you can never get comfortable in recruiting, even after recruits sign and enroll, Ohio State believes that it is in a good spot to keep Jacobs committed and eventually land his signature.

Personally, I think this recruitment has plenty of twists and turns ahead. I believe Jacobs will eventually follow through with his plan to take his own official visits, not just trips where Dawson is the center of attention. I believe he will visit a variety of campuses in the coming months, including in the fall, before making a final decision. He is extremely excited about his future at Ohio State. He is absolutely looking forward to what's to come in Columbus. That is authentic.

That said, he is one of the most intelligent, thoughtful, well-rounded prospects I've come across in a long time. He knows that he is in a position to take these visits and essentially, play by his own rules. He isn't the type you can play hardball with. If he wants to take visits and take his time before announcing any further, he has that luxury, something he has very much earned. Ohio State might lead with him committed today, but this recruitment isn't close to being over.

I'm so sick of recruiting anymore. I miss the good old days of kids committing in February and that was that. This is so tiresome!
When was that, 1936? As far back as I remember kids that committed early flipped all the time. I never trusted Miami commits that committed a year out. For years the theory was that they used Miami for a bigger bag elsewhere, and I believe it. Not all of them flipped, of course, but a heck of a lot of them did.

We flip a lot more kids than we lose to flips. We are benefitting from the very thing of which you are complaining about. Mario in particular does not back off if a player is committed elsewhere.

So despite the fact that kids flipping their commitments have helped UM, are you still against the practice?

Personally I’m in favor of anything and everything that helps UM; commitment flipping, NIL, Transfer Portal. We have a coach and administration that is constantly evolving as the landscape evolves.

Got a feeling pops is our biggest advocate working with Mario to navigate this recruitment and is lulling O$U to sleep right before a vicious Mario upper cut hits them in the face.
