Dan Le Betard Show - Miami Scoop

So, you are mad that Miami isn't running a old school USSR style steroid program. It's not an accident that a lot of Alabama guys get smaller once they hit the NFL, because the NFL at least attempts to test for PEDs. I would want an improved nutrition table, just because that helps any S&C program maximize what a guy can be. That said, barring Miami going full ham on the PEDs, I don't see Miami guys having that kind of cartoonish size and strength. However, Miami starts recruiting more freak athletes, maybe we look better getting off the bus.
Bring me an AD that demands mandatory Blue Whale/Silverback Gorilla extract injections and twice-per-week deer antler spray treatments.

If each players' helmet do not increase by at least two sizes within 6 months of arriving on campus, fire the wussy S&C and get Barry Bonds to Hecht.

True story. I know a former player. Olineman in the late Erickson early Butch era that said they used to put creatine in the Gatorade tanks without the players knowing. If anyone can provide follow up information as to whether or not this actually happened go ahead and chime in.

Pretty sure that’s the main reason SI ran the, “Why the University of Miami Should Drop Football” cover story in ‘95.

That's the question. Will this bump be consistent, or is it a "We're going to help, you better be able to keep this going on your own" type of deal? If Miami is making CFP appearances regularly and playing in major bowl games, the infusion shouldn't be needed long term. What happens if Miami hires Mario/Lane and they fail? Will they see it through? Or will they back out?
Everything and report has specifically said ANNUALLY

Think through this just a moment muppets...

Press release: Coral Gables, FL

During this time of heightened public health focus, medical staff burnout, ballistically increasing provision of care costs, intense provider vs facility contracts, aging infrastructure sustainment/replacement requirements, flatlined/declining reimbursement rates from all payers, increasing uninsured/under insured patient populations, HHS clawbacks for re-admissions, skyrocketing pharmacy/compound pharmacy expenses, etc. The University of Miami has decided it is in our best interest to harvest "excess" funds from UHealth product lines and re-direct them to assist the Athletic Department in building championship caliber programs. When asked about this bold initiative, Dr. Frenk, the University's President stated, "I planned this alongside Joe Echevarria [UHealth CEO] with full support from the BoT that this path we are on is the most ethical, moral, and best use of healthcare funds. Our brilliant legal team has also assured me this will not invite any scrutiny from government regulators or place at risk our PPS-exempt status along with of course HRRP, considering a significant portion of our reimbursements are directly from Medicare and Medicaid. In fact, we've heard from HHS they not only support this idea, but LOVE IT, and want bring it to other University Health Systems across the country."

Have you lost your minds?
The. u logo was literally created by the athletic department. Call it a licensing fee ……

I’m not saying I prefer Kiffin over Mario, but in the long run I think there could be some benefits to finally getting away from “a Miami cinnection
When I was younger, I preferred boob jobs. But as an elder statesman, nowadays, I prefer all natural. Life is funny that way.
agreed. Natural is the way to go

This program was skating by being cheap forever. Thing is that before we made it by with culture and talent and also great coaches. Not anymore. Won’t fly

Not what mike said. Said that was separate

I know what he said, and I realize what the stated intention was. But he is wrong, unless something changes.

Blake has not budgeted for upcoming buyouts/payouts, and unless an alum contributes money (as just happened at Michigan State to give Tucker his raise), then much of the Year 1 increase will, in fact, be spent on a buyout (assuming we hire a coach under contract) and payouts (assuming we pay Manny a lump sum, though that could be spread over a couple of years).

When Michigan State just offered Mel Tucker a raise/extension, it was funded by two alumni/booster contributions. MSU did not have that money otherwise.

I realize that we intend to increase the budget annually, but unless (a) a booster steps up to pay the buyouts/payouts, (b) the new AD announcement suddenly generates a sharp increase in fund-raising, and/or (c) Frenk does the math and realizes that we need an extra $15-20M in Year 1, then most of the Year 1 increase will, in fact, be spent on payouts and buyouts. Regardless of whether that was the intention. Don't expect to see a bunch of new support staff hires until Year 2, unless we find the money through one of those other three supplemental sources.

Also go back and take a look at the discussion on buyouts on a separate thread. Buyouts have to be grossed-up for income tax, because it is money you pay to a PERSON, who in turn pays it to his employer. Thus, if Miami covers Mario's contractual $9M buyout, the ACTUAL cash outlay will be about 50% higher than the contractual number.

It was not "forever".

Pre-ACC, we were "cheap" because we had to be cheap, we just did not have the conference revenue, so we had no money to spend. And as Vish pointed out in his article, everything else changed in 2011 when we freaked the fvck out due to the Shapiro scandal.

But, hey, from 2006-2011, we were living it up on our ACC riches!

SEC is getting how much a year now? Pretty absurd amount of money. Read it covered nearly 100% of all athletic staffs at some of the lower schools. Insane.

Yep. Between our nepotism-inspired devotion to Jefferson Pilot and our "last-to-the-party" conference network deal, the ACC is WAY behind other conferences, particularly the SEC and Big 10.

Is the ACCN on in SoFla yet?

Yep, because it makes a ton of sense for Miami to sit on money that could go to football, just because. A likely one time cash infusion to the program doesn't change the fact that there are legitimate reasons why you can't just move money around for football willy nilly. Never mind the funds that legally can't be moved(Earmarked), and other potential legal issues(Title IX).

It's amazing that so many people, who never trusted this administration to begin with are buying this "We're going to spend whatever it takes, by having UHealth subsidize the program" snow job. This smells like a "Say whatever needs to be said to said to get the bad PR to go away" ploy, and knowing how Frenk and others on the BOT operate, it makes a ton of sense. Blake James was incompetent, but I don't think he thought that everything was going to be "No" unless he was told that. I'm quite sure he would want to be employed and having funding to do whatever needs to be done is one of the easiest ways for an AD to stay gainfully employed.

Now, I'm not denying that UHealth is putting some cash in, but I would be willing to bet that there is a tacit agreement between Frenk and the people at UHealth that this isn't going to be permanent. In other words, UHealth puts money in now(Think seed money for a startup), the program better start leveraging that and turning a profit and become a self supporting entity that can compete. In other words, the benefits our fans keep touting better happen, which means that if this thing gets turned around(Which I hope happens), fans better actually do something they didn't do in the "Decade of Dominance", nor in the 2000-2004 run: SHOW UP AND SPEND MONEY.
I said nothing about uhealth funds. There are other areas in any university funds can be shifted. I believe the u has not spent all available and you do. I agree to disagree.
