Dan Le Betard Show - Miami Scoop

Funny that after YEARS of hearing (often by people around here) that we don't have money for athletics or especially that we don't understand how university budgets work and you CANNOT just take money from one end of a university and dump it in another that Kirk Herbstreit (God bless him) makes ONE comment on national TV and BAM....here's $30 mil! And why are people citing that the money is so easily available? Because UHealth is raking it in.

Sooooo maybe as a future point of reference whenever we discuss college athletics and university finances let's just adhere to the notion of "Where there's a will (or effective public pressure)....there's always a way".
Yeah remember " u cant just take it from Uhealth, donors are gonna be mad". Always been bullsh!t. Moreover Frenk sees it as a marketing tool for Uhealth. They started using that "U" on everything because of the football program.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it and after that tune out the national media. Miami has money, Miami has always had money, Miami CHOSE to not spend money on the football program, specifically the coaching staff. Julio Frenk has a twitter, he posted one of his last post, saying they are close to raising 2.5 Billion, thats with a B.

With that comes mediocrity and the griping about where the stadium is located, facilities, bags. And on and on. I will say it again. Miami #1 recruiting tool is a proper coaching staff. You dont spend on that, its 7-5, 8-4. With population growth since we were good and the dolphins sucking ***, Miami has alot of fans to win over and increase the attendance simply by winning. Yall seen a glimpse of it in 2017. Put together just 3 or 4 season like that in 5 years and all that yapping out the window.

Some disclaimers.

The $2.5 billion is being raised in conjunction with UM's 100th anniversary. The fund-raising started IN 2015. They have 4 years to go.

The Athletics goal is $225 million. Athletics has also been raising money SINCE 2016. We are over $125 million already, but that includes EVERYTHING, including the IPF. So when you deduct that building, Athletics has raised less than $100 million in 6 years, and will try to raise another $100 million in the next FOUR years. Which is why Beta Blake hired/promoted so many fund-raisers.

The real game-changer is UHealth, which we have owned for less than 20 years (the purchase happened on Shalala's watch). Now that we have survived our initial overpayment for the UHealth System, it is generating MASSIVE profits (for a not-for-profit), so we can reasonably expect some "sharing of the wealth".

The reason for the clarification is that fund-raising is usually for CAPITAL improvements, or endowment funds, while annual "profits" (such as UHealth) would go towards paying operating expenses, such as salaries.

We need both, but without an on-campus stadium to service, I would definitely say that an increase in our operating budget would be more helpful than fund-raising.

Most of it should go to the coaching staff, our coaching staff needs to look like playoff teams coaching staff. The HC should not be expected to kill himself and work miracles. We don't need a massive recruiting budget when we don't have to rack up as many air miles as other teams to recruit 75-80% of our classes

Most of it should def go to our staff...

But

We need to up the budget too. It’s under an M I believe, we need to up that. Yes, we are in SoFla but still, we recruit nationally too. If we are investing and want to become big time, don’t cut any corners and exhaust all avenues. Recruiting is the backbone of CFB and we need more $$ there. JMO

Ok kool. Still Uhealth making 400mill profit per year is freaking insane. Like 1 Billion profit in 2 and half years.

Which associate athletics director from Bama? They have multiple.

Didn't say we shouldn't increase it. If the budget is being increased, it will naturally. But my main thing is make our staff look like a playoff team's staff. UGA, Bama, OU maybe, Clemson, ND etc. I want britches being soiled all along the south east.

I agree, have to up the recruiting budget by 500k, also Mario needs a chopper to fly from Campuses around the local schools. Time is to valuable to waste riding around in the car.

Adidas is paying Miami money Nike will never pay. 12 year 160 million dollar deal plus with adidas is very lucrative

Untrue. Highly untrue.

Also, you have no idea how much the sports merchandise market has changed, just in the past few years. Fanatics has had a huge impact, and they are actually running the merch operations for many pro teams, both website and at-stadium.

If Miami regains a national Top 10 merch sales ranking, the adidas deal will be small.

Posted this in the other LeBatard thread
Correct spelling for Bama guy and his background. Has roots with Orange Bowl committee and an FSU grad but good credentials

Being at Alabama, he has worked with Mario and Lane.
