D-line

One huge difference was that Missouri built tremendous depth across their D line that allowed the younger kids to come in and get adjusted properly. Miami has had to play younger kids who weren't ready physically or mentally. Missouri under Pinkel had a great player developmental plan and it showed itself well during his tenure there. Miami has sorely been lacking that. Miami's roster always seems to be disjointed and out of place.

We really don't know what these guys on the DL are capable of, because since they have been in college they have not played for a coach nor in a system that allowed them to show their talents.

I have a feeling next year we'll see a vast improvement.....but I can't predict their ceiling. Under Coach Kool and an attacking D, I predict someone on the D-line is going to have a break out year.

2 weeks from getting blasted all season long and now we have one of the better lines in the country.

It's the Happy Adjuster mindset. When trying to make a point they'll push it to the extremes with no clue regarding the burden. That's how you end up with Top 5 or Best in Country instead of "improved."

In Las Vegas betting circles we always hoped a Happy Adjuster would be hired to manage a sportsbook. No telling what type of bargains you might find. Unfortunately it only happened a couple of times. My friend Dave ruined one on the first try, circa mid '90s. That manager put up a prop with a ridiculous overboard adjustment. Instead of betting it once or twice Dave stood there and demanded to bet it again, even though it had been taken off the board for evaluation. I told him we needed to get out of there and await future gaffes. That wasn't Dave's style. He threw a fit, demanding to know what the next number was going to be on that prop. It was so far off you literally could keep betting it 10 or 12 times and still have an advantage. Anyway, the sportsbook manager got fed up with Dave and summoned security, who removed Dave from the premises and told him to stay away.

Let's see, in this category I'll prefer Alabama and take my chances. No Happy Adjusting required. Just logic. They allowed an amazing 2.3 yards per rush this season. I saw an article a month or so ago with an NFL scout claiming it's the deepest and most talented group he's ever seen, from freshmen up. All big and mobile.

Meanwhile, we are on a recent void of legitimately elite defensive tackles. That doesn't stop now. It impacts future seasons until Richt fixes things.

You make an excellent point. UM subtracts Coach D'Onofrio, McCord, Kamalu, Heurtelou and maybe Jenkins. It adds Coach Kool, Willis and a bunch of unknowns. Why does that all of a sudden look way better? Now if Jenkins regains his eligibility, Richt inks a monster at DT, a JUCO for depth, and someone tells us that Willis and/or McIntosh ripped up the scout team, then I'm excited. This unit should be slightly better.

I have to look at Michigan for how much a good coach can change a team, Michigan was left for dead by everyone and JH comes in and in 1 offseason made them a 3 loss team ( 2 losses if they punt or fall on the ball vs MSU)
Our D will be much improved, we have SOME horses but we need more our O should be interesting with Richts style and Kayaa in his 3rd year

Think Trent Harris takes a huge step this year. One of our more consistent DL from last year, and contrary to what people have said, I think he fits perfectly into Diaz's defense. I think he takes on the role AJ Jefferson played for MSU last year - rarely leaves the field, can play both outside and in a 3-tech. With the new S&C team and coach Kool he could be a monster. He would have to get up to around 270-275 for that (*cringing at thoughts of Chickillo*), but I think he'd carry the weight much much better. Not as much of an explosive athlete, lot more of a coal shoveler feel?

*edit AJ had 47 tackles, 13.5 for loss, 5.0 sacks, 7 QB hurries, and a forced fumble. Should see pretty similar production, maybe more

Tent Harris is not a 4-3 DE.

I don't see him having much of a future here.

He will get passed on the depth chart by Scott Pacthan immediately. Patchan will be a monster here.

If we can get a guy in the door at S&C, Harris might still be able to turn **** around.

Our DL is garb.

Chad Thomas is too worried about his rap career.
Jenkins is academically ineligible.
Willis has done what again?
Trusty Trent is average at best.
AQM has done what?
Ill give Norton and Moten a pass because they are young and haven't been on the field long enough.

Agreed that Patchan will be better. He's going to have to work like a dog this offseason, though, to pass Harris on the depth chart. Gives up a solid 10-15 pounds, and a full two years of on-field, college game experience.

D-line will not be our issue next year, especially with how they are utilized in a Diaz scheme

Our LBer and Safety depth will once again be our Achilles heel when playing top 40 opponents

Our first two units look good to me.

DE-Chad Thomas, Trent Harris
DT-Gerald Willis, Anthony Moten
DT-Courtel Jenkins, Kendrick Norton
DE-AQM, D Jax

I'd like to see more quality depth in case of injury though.

Thats a **** good looking Dline IMO!!

They were stuck in a system that didn't utilize their talents, with subpar coaching.

They have talent - I believe they'll show this year.

Agree. Harris is from the Golden era - slow guy who doesn't quite have a natural position. He'll be out of place in a 4-3 scheme like the one we're running. I think he can provide somewhat adequate depth as backup but that's about it. Same for Smith.

No doubt Willis and coach Kool can make a difference but here is a dose of reality on how our DL line did this year .

--None made 1st-2nd or 3rd string ACC
--26 sacks ranked #64 in Nation
--5.26 yds/carry # 103 in nation
--66 tackles for loss # 96 in Nation

Not trying to be funny, but those numbers are actually better than I would have guessed. It sure didn't seem like we had more than 30 TFL or 15 sacks.

Lol exactly. Hilarious how delusional people are. Coach Kool is a good one and will have these guys playing better...but to say this will be one of the best in the country after this year's disaster is pushing it

The disaster was the scheme and the coaching. The talent and ability is there to be optimistic about, but I agree not stated as fact. The scheme with the potential of the players could be exactly what those guys are saying. Not hard to see. I also would not be surprised if Trent went to Linebacker now to add depth there. It is going to be fun just hearing about all the changes, and I am hopeful that it translates on the field as domination.

I don't know I think we will be pretty deep

* RJ McIntosh played some this year and he looked huge he will grow into a DT he was 275 as a freshman
* Ryan Fines came in 310 lbs was decent at IMG
* Add Patchan to the mix and we are close to three deep with decent plays at each spot.

MOTEN MOTEN MOTEN. Mark it down. He will be the BEAST who finally becomes the maneater we''ve needed on the D-Line..

I'm really big on him. I think he sees a concentrated number of snaps next season, but they will be impactful.
