D$ et al -- How did Jarren Williams do on the scout team?

It's difficult to accurately assess any of the QB's considering they were playing in Pastor Rich's dusty old Bobby Bowden Offense.

Once we get an OC & QB coach and implement a Spread Offense (we better!), we should have a much better idea of what all the QB's including any GT's look like at optimum level.

Jarren should get nothing but 1st/2nd team reps in the Spring & if he's shown progress should be allowed a real shot to win the starting job in Fall camp, even if we do bring in a Grad Transfer.

But a lot will depend on who our OC/QB coach is, I like Jarren but I'm not buying any Greentree mythology. Idc what anybody says or who's seen him in practice, I'm not crowing him until I see it in an actual game.

What exactly does a scout team do? I recall reading here jarren was asked/told to throw interceptions at one point but refused and got in the doghouse for it

I agree 100 he’s gotta prove it on the field, but did you watch him live in the spring game? I’ve gotta feeling you didn’t based on your comments. You seem to know the goods when you see them. Watching Jarren live in the spring game was like nothing I’ve seen at UM in over a decade of spring games.

He looked good in the Spring game vs 2nd & 3rd team Defense, so did Perry.

Spring game doesn't mean anything to me, real game matters. And I'm not saying he sucks or isn't good at all, I'm simply not going to crown him until he shows it in a game vs real comp. I said I like the kid, just wanna see it when it actually counts before I declare him the next great.

Our fans should know better than anybody by now not to prematurely crown QB's anymore. Haven't we learned that lesson the hard way too many times already? Lol

No, Perry didn’t do well in spring games. His percentage was pretty low. It was an alarm already. Spring games stats may not tell you how good a QB could be since there is no real tackles. But they can absolutely indicate how bad a QB can be

I didn't see him on scout team, but Jarren was the most impressive QB in spring. That was the only time he got major reps with the 2s because Weldon had an eye infection.

These are the officially released stats for all 3 spring scrimmages (credit to @Astcloud11):

Malik Rosier -- 20 for 35 (57.1 percent), 296 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception
N'Kosi Perry -- 24 for 50 (48.0 percent), 253 yards, 1 touchdown, 2 interceptions
Cade Weldon -- 9 for 12 (75.0 percent), 113 yards (Note: missed two scrimmages with eye infection)
Jarren Williams -- 17 for 25 (68.0 percent), 224 yards, 3 touchdowns

Even when Jarren was going 3s on 3s, he was marching up the field with walk-ons. Of course, he was going against third-teamers, but typically the offense has a harder time in that scenario.

We did not give Jarren enough reps when Weldon came back. By the time fall camp rolled around, he was out of shape and (IMO) disillusioned. He probably thought he did not get a fair opportunity. As a result, his performance wasn't as good. Rosier had a strong camp and the rest is history.

Greentree is limited for QBs because they don't get hit. We won't know what Jarren is until he plays real games. But he's big, he has a strong arm and most importantly he is decisive. He trusts what he sees and doesn't flinch. I am praying he keeps working and gets a fair shot because he has legit tools.
As an aside, Malik 57.1% and 3/1 TD/Int ratio. Would have been pretty good stats for him.
Hoping Jarren pans out, but we really need to bring in some studs.

Dude. You know we haven't.

Thanks for your insights, D and El. Wish we had some intel on his scout performance.

I was against Kaaya starting as a freshman because he had too much of a sense of entitlement. But I wanted Williams to start this season as it was clear that Rosier was capped at 50% completion rate no matter how dumbed down the offense was, and Perry was too immature. But I really don't like hearing that as a newbie Freshman. Williams became disillusioned and lost his edge a few months into his time on campus. Sounds entitled (my concern with Kaaya) and weak-minded no matter how bad the Richts were. If you hate the situation, all the more reason to work harder so you can transfer to a better opportunity. Don't throw your hands up and get fat.

I really hope Williams flips the switch and lives up to his potential. But we have to get a GT on campus ASAP.
