All of the consultants on this board and anyone that received an MBA in the last 25 years, have read Peter Drucker’s timeless quote on countless occasions, on either HBR, some slide deck on organizational culture, in class, at the office, or at a client site. You know it well, and you also know get getting this simple thing right (culture) is foundational to creating a high performing organization/team, and it all starts at the top.
Strategy and capabilities (talent), without good culture in place are incongruent, and no strategy, however strong, can overcome it. A strong culture, good strategy and talent (capabilities) must all be aligned to perform at a high level with repeatable results. This is true in Business, and it’s true in sports.
Where am I going with my mini treatise? RICHT IS THE PROBLEM, and I am writing this for anyone that believes hiring some super genius OC or Jesus himself at OL coach, will be a panacea for our problems. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN as long as Richt is HC, because is a poor leader that creates and ‘exists’ comfortably in a laissez faire, non-detail oriented football culture. This is who he is. He ran his program that way at Georgia and it’s the way he runs it at Miami.
So, even if we add the super genius OC, Jesus, sixty 5-Star players, and stellar QB, we will still show soft tendencies. As a result, 9-4/10/3 seasons will continue and we’ll will be prone to “Richt gonna Richt” choke jobs against the BC’s and UVA’s of the world, because Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast.
Don’t be fooled. Richt must go!
