Culture Change at Miami

How many of us are old enough to recall the culture problem under Coker, as Shannon “changed” the culture starting by removing the names of the back of the jersey to promote unity vs. individuality?

How many of us are old enough to recall the culture problem under Shannon, as Golden “changed” the culture by promoting We-Fense, & community activities?

How many of us are old enough to recall the culture problem under Golden, as Richt “changed” the culture by having student athletes answer yes sir, reply no sir, inserting mat drills, & more community service?

How many of us are old enough to recall the culture problem under Richt, as Manny “changed” the culture by establishing TNM which was supposed to be TOM (The Old Miami). Remember how certain posters were applauding & praising his antics, including crashing FSU’s Nike coaching clinic?

It seems like every new coach inherits a culture problem here, then become apart of the culture problem. I rather wait & see although my gut tells me this should finally put an end to our misery this yr.

Everything you said is true. Each coach substituted "his culture" for "the other guy's culture".

However, I also feel that Mario is trying to bring back the Miami culture we had in the 80s and early 90s when we were winning championships, so I'm going to allow it.

@Rellyrell for some reason after I read your post, I remembered W saying "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice ... we won't get fooled again."

Agree with you, my man. Just feel it's different this time. I did not feel that way about Shannon or Manny. But in all fairness, I did feel that way about F.A.G. and Richt. Mario is my third time is a charm. Of course, I could just be a fool.

Bro, I know we’ve butted heads on the 8 vs 10 wins this season & views of progress, but we desperately need this to be a successful yr. I know there’s a couple of trolls on here who r not real Canes fans, but the ones deemed as “mopes” r just fanatics who r egregiously frustrated & for good reason. I want yr 3 for Mario to be a success, not just for him but the betterment of the program.

All will be forgiven if yr 3 is a smash success, but we need it be as such.

Indulge me for a moment.

I frickin hated the Manny hire. I really tried to be nice those first two years, especially during Covid. But I was totally disgusted. I actually rooted for FSU to beat us in 2021 I wanted him gone so badly. So I get it. It's time for Mario to deliver on his promise. I'm just more forgiving than you because I was in such a dark place pre-Mario, lol. I also think the program's NIL supports and the university leaders expect progress but will continue to indulge him as long as the record keeps improving. And they're the smart money backing the program's revival.

Now that you know why I will give Mario one more hall pass even if he goes 8 wins, I want to be clear. This roster should go to the playoffs. I am 100% in agreement with you that it would be a tragic waste of talent if we won only 8 games, even 9 games. There is not a team on our schedule who has as much talent as we do across the board. Maybe FSU if they hit on every one of their transfers.

I personally don't think our DTs are playoff caliber. I don't think our safeties are playoff caliber. And I don't think our CBs are playoff caliber. That's a lot of areas of potential weakness on the defense. But our Offense is definitely playoff caliber across all position groups. And we have lights out DEs and LBs. So as a team, we have enough talent to make it to the playoffs, and even win a couple playoff games. So, yeah, I'm with you it's time that Mario delivers on his promise.

3 hires I loathed, & I know I didn’t join CIS until late 2013, but I was on other platforms that discussed CFB:

1. Shannon
2. Golden (I specifically said “Who” out loud while in my office)
3. Diaz

I vehemently disapproved of all 3 hires. I was “OK” w/ the Mario hire, although I had my concerns just b/c being out West; & b/c I’m heavily involved in football, I have various connections to UO’s program. I watched them a lot just b/c, again, I’m out West. I figured w/ Mario’s recruiting abilities, he’ll be able to overcome some coaching deficiencies.

I wasn’t gravely concerned about yr 1. Concerned? Yes, but not gravely concerned. I even battled w/ many posters explaining the how’s & y’s we had a 5-7 start. My concerns came yr 2, as I was certain, based upon empirical data of coaches we consider good-elite, that a coach of Mario’s reputation developed at UO would take a roster thats better than the rest of the ACC sans FSU & Clemson to at least 9 wins.

After discussing the GT game w/ a former UO alum + NFL vet, that’s when I was turned on to the fallacies of Mario’s coaching while there, & was admonished to examine the PAC-12, as a whole, during Mario’s tenure. When I discovered how watered down the league was from 2019-2021, and re-watched **** near every loss UO had to inferior teams on paper, ? marks raised. So it’s something I took notice of, & as the 2023-4 season unfolded, some things just reared itself.

Now, here’s y I’m hopeful this season: When Mario inherited Justin Herbert, he went 21-6 including 2-0 in bowl games. Mario hasn’t had a NFL level QB since Herbert. W/o Herbert, He’s 26-20 at the P5/4 level, which is no bueno, BUT now he has a NFL caliber QB, & arguably the best QB in the ACC.

W/e deficiencies that may exist can be glossed over by Ward. Ward + Martinez r the sole reasons y the vast majority of media outlets r bullish on us. It’s y I’m like this is a 10+ win roster. All I can go by is data & history. I agree we have some holes on the roster, particularly in the 2ndary, but there’s not enough holes to deter us from 10+ wins, imho, or should I say “it should not deter us.”

As excited as I have recently become, I still gotta reserve to think that 8-5 with close losses to good teams and no ugly assed surprises is in the cards.

I key on injuries and a bad day at the worst time - maybe even 2 - and I could still squint at that record and be okay-ish moving into 25.

No true GT coRching moves, no getting MTSU'd, and some hard fought nail biters that don't go our way - if we pass the eyeball test and can maintain a consequent crootin' mode, I'll take 8-5.

Relly just said it better.

The one thing all the Previous failed culture changers had in common was letting undiscipline players continue to get playing time. I really can’t remember the last time a coach benched the player for continued mess ups before it costed Miami a win

Pope Wiggins and George come to mind

No, actually, the problem is people want to make definitive statements before the work is done. If 8-5 is the W/L record in December, we won't be discussing culture. As @Rellyrell illustrated, we've heard this song and dance before.
I'm done with the going back and forth on all this stuff. The season is here and I don't care about opinions for people who wanna be miserable. I don't know what anyone else has had to say now or before. But a very small handful of people on here have had enough access to the program throughout the years to physically see the difference in the approach from them till now. Culture isn't wins and losses. It's how you approach it all. Y'all's Cuban but buddy had these jits dancing, playing on ****** slip and slides during camp, dressing up with your god **** head of s & c like various marvel characters & flossing jewelry. Not a **** one of them understood accountability or leadership. Wasn't much different from Coker to onion to alfraud or Mandy.

Not a word I disagree with here.

Would I fire Mario if we go 8-5? Probably not. It's also moot, because he won't be fired at 8-5. He's going to have a monster 2025 class and the overall talent level may very well be better next season.

At the same time, an 8-5 record with this roster and this schedule is a failure. Unequivocally.

Not if the culture is improving and the program is being built the right way. That’s the more important goal right now.

A corch is a corch is a corch, regardless of race or ethnicity. So I'm not sure why the Cuban descriptor is necessary, especially when Mario is also Cuban. Unless maybe you were using "Y'all's Cuban" to express Manny is not your Cuban HC, and that Mario is your Cuban HC. But, if that is what you were trying to convey, please trust we all already knew that to be the case.

Winning the right way adds wins to the win column. Anyone can go 10-3. Literally anyone. Going 8-5 the right way is much tougher.

I'm working on the book for after we win our next two nattys. My current working title:

The Right Culture, the Right Cuban, the Right Way: How Mario Cristobal Brought Back the U.

I respectfully disagree with you. I don’t see how you can go eight and five and keep that monster 2025 class.
