I just came back from that game it was nothing like that picture. It was pretty good show out. I was shocked.

That's correct. More people than I expected.

Shocked is the proper word. I was beyond shocked. Normally I can predict the crowd even if the outcome surprises me. This time I was so stunned at the crowd size, and that the vast majority stayed until beyond the middle of the 4th quarter, that I kept looking around for explanation. The upper deck on the west side was particularly dense, given the level of anticipation for this game, which was near zero. Lots of young kids in those sections. There might have been giveaways that weren't publicized.

That screen shot in the OP is from the senior sendoff, which began 23 minutes before kickoff and lasted nearly 10 minutes. The crowd is always light during that time frame. Thankfully it was a night game and not a nooner. Otherwise, divide by 1.5

As others posted, the student section was predictably barren, given the Thanksgiving holiday. That's the area above the helmet in the OP. It was much worse at the basketball game against South Alabama on Friday, with the student section maybe 1/4 as occupied and involved as typical. I remember that dynamic from my years at USC.

Despite the larger than logical crowd, I have to say the pregame atmosphere in the parking lot and stadium was the worst in memory. Completely dead. Nobody was boisterous or trying to hype the game beyond its worth. I was worried the malaise might carry over to the team and it did, although there's no excuse for that. Pittsburgh was bigger, more physical, more prepared, and with a bowl berth on the line they simply cared more than we did.

From the senior sendoff, the highlight was Tony Chickillo proudly and physically greeting his son Anthony. Tony pounded Anthony on the shoulder pads like he was preparing him for the game.
