Our corners do not seem comfortable in man press. I don't see them turning around looking for the ball. They face guard the receiver all the way. That is coaching. Faceguarding is ok at first, but you need to turn and find that ball. Communication helps with this. When a pass is in the air are the other defensive players yelling ball! Also, our corners never seem to bump the receiver off their route. Just seems our man press is actually man/run with the receiver. Our corners are not trying to initiate the contact.
Lastly, man coverage is predicated on a pass rush. You can only hold down your coverage for 3-5 seconds before it starts to break down. We are terrible at:
1. Having our D-Line pressure the quarterback. This requires Miami to blitz in order to pressure the QB, this means less in coverage. and 2. Keep the quarterback contained.
If you give a quarterback, even a back up freshman *cough* like the one that raped our defense last week 6-8 seconds to throw he will pick apart man coverage.
So poor technique coaching for our corners followed by a poor pass rush talent usage, scheme, and coaching has led us to this mess of a pass defense.
