You mean #0 on this play? Yeah I get what you're saying here. If Reed threw that ball on time it's likely a first down (on 3rd and 17 when they max protected).

But I think the bet is as long as we tackle, our players (especially our DL) will eventually make a play to stop the drive, force a TO, or at worst give up a FG attempt. Has worked out most of the time, but like the 4th quarter of the FSU game and the last A&M drive, can lead to a little excessive heart palpitation (at least on my part)

Edit: also the spot drop allows more eyes on a potentially scrambling QB, no? Most of the FBS QBs we have played this year have been better than average runners.

I made the mistake of crowning Guidry before I realized he was joke, so I don't want to crown Heatherman just yet.

However, if one cannot see that Heatherman has absolutely made a difference, then you are not being objective.

Sure, you can say that Heatherman has better talent/players than Guidry did. While that may be true, Guidry also had NFL players (Kiko, Tyler Barron, Mishael Powell, a few others) and Guidry also had the current players (Bain, Mesidor, Bissanthe, Moten, others) that will be in the NFL. Guidry couldn't do anything with them. He actually hindered their development. We see the difference Heatherman has made for Bain, Mesidor, Moten, Justin Scott, Popo, Damari Brown).

If Heatherman was our DC last year, we would have made the playoffs. I don't think we would have went very far due to our secondary, but we are in the playoffs. Would have also had an answer for GT' qb who couldn't even throw a pass that game.

I’m good. It’s pattern recognition. I say certain things to know what type of person I’m talking to. I have him figured out and it’s not worth anymore of my time because it was easy.

Guys are completely selling out to fulfill their role on this defense. Last Sat, guys were flying in like kamikazes to take out the lead block so the guy behind him could make the play.

We've limited explosive plays given up relative to last year. Do you disagree that playing spot drop vs match has helped in that regard?

We are top-20 in takeaways/gm, sacks/gm, and TFLs/gm. As long as we tackle well past the sticks (which we usually do), bending a bit on defense doesn't concern me.

Earlier in the year we were bad at stopping teams from scoring TDs when they got in the red zone (gave up nearly 6 points per drive on those first 7 games), but since then we have given up less than 3 points per drive when the defense has bent enough that the opponent scrimmages in the red zone (and we are also giving up fewer red zone drives per game). We give up more yards than other very good defenses, but we are elite at limiting points.

I thought McElroy was spot on when he said our defense is more about players than plays early in the A&M broadcast. We've got a bunch of guys who are going to be NFL players playing on our defense this year. The scheme is pretty simple, they rarely get tricked, the communication is great, they play fast, and create a lot of havoc.

Maybe it's not sustainable without similar elite pro-ready talent, but we don't know that Hetherman would have the same defensive plan in future years.

You’re actually wrong, yes. We played exceptionally vanilla vs ATM but we routinely disguised looks and blitzes all year. We routinely played match and split man/zone on plays all year. We adjusted when OJ went out and we actually improved as a D because of it.
The exploiting came from the heavy boxes. After that shift the defense has been lights out playing simpler. We also play more spot vs mobile QBs
