You gotta love the game....It's a form of friendly extortion.
What happens when State Governors tell the NCAA that they can’t play in their state?
SEC is bout sick of the NCAA.
Lol. Read again. If they want they can force the power 5 to shut it down. Not by any other mechanism than optics but they can actually wield power over them.
No, they can't "force the power 5 to shut it down." Again, just the opposite in reality. The P5 conferences, in particular, hold the cards when it comes to the NCAA. Membership in the NCAA is purely voluntary. Traditionally schools "joined" the NCAA because if you weren't a member, you couldn't compete for NCAA titles and NCAA competitions and those mattered in multiple different ways. That is really why the NCAA still controls the post season. But they need the P5 conferences and no reasonable person disputes that. However, the autonomous vote I referenced earlier allows the P5 conferences to largely do what they want, individually or collectively, (see issues like student athlete stipends and how those vary among conferences) and the P5 conferences, without question, control their own regular seasons. That is why you see different P5 conferences set different schedules right now. The autonomous vote allows them that kind of power. They don't need NCAA permission; they already have the power through the autonomous vote.
People who blame or praise the NCAA just don't understand its real role. It exists because of voluntary membership by schools. It has a stick, but that stick is getting much smaller and the P5 stick, particularly with the autonomous vote and the really lucrative conference based TV/media deals, is much larger. P5 doesn't need the NCAA. It could very easily form its own whatever. The NCAA needs the P5.
Power Five leaders pressure NCAA with threat to stage own fall championships ahead of vote
The NCAA meets next week to decide the fate of fall sports championships in 2020www.cbssports.com
Absolutely agree. The P5 going on its own poses a ton of challenges and obstacles. My point is that, particularly since the autonomous vote, the NCAA continues any "power"only because the P5 finds the NCAA arrangement convenient right now, and not because the NCAA really has the greater power. Here's the thing with backing out of the NCAA. You would be giving up membership to a proven commodity for the unknown....which is very tough to do.
Even more difficult than that is expecting a group of 5 different conferences would be able to work together and agree on anything themselves. Could you imagine those negotiations?
I don’t think she’s seeing Danny anymore....in fact nobody seeing Danny anymore.....Dinich clears it up in a later article

Saban will personally strangle Mark Emmert to death if they cancel the season.
But don't let them dangling this fear carrot in front of the world distract you from the fact that Emmert just 2 days ago (Wednesday) sat before congress in a Senate Judiciary committee hearing pleading to grant the NCAA Antitrust protection from lawsuits in the new NIL rulings. He also asked that Congress create a Federal Bill to govern & regulate player compensation.
See what's going on is the NCAA is still livid about the NIL rulings & are trying like **** for Congress to oversee & regulate the potential Pandora's box of players being paid for their name, image & likeness, coincidentally they're simultaneously telling everyone that Football might get cancelled this year.
This isn't a political statement so please don't use this as an opportunity to derail the thread discussing politics. I'm just saying, Emmert & the NCAA are using Covid as a cover to air their real grievances & are essentially saying, "It would be a real shame if there was no football this year with all that money lost, maybe if someone made a ruling in our favor things would suddenly look more positive on our end.."
The NCAA operates like a big *** conglomerate Mafia & they don't wanna share none of the earnings they've been hoarding for decades, if they have to take it to college football for a season to get their point across then so be it, but best believe them cancelling Football has way way more to do with back room politics at the top than it does with Health & safety of student athletes like they'll claim.

A LOT of people are using Covid as an excuse for everything. Sick of it.Saban will personally strangle Mark Emmert to death if they cancel the season.

Throw one other layer of the onion at you. The NCAA is a 501c3 tax exempt organization. It’s tax exemption is based on... the promotion of amateur athletics. Kind of hard to argue you are promoting amateur athletics if your athletes are now being paid. The rest of this is a drop in the bucket compared to this issue.Saban will personally strangle Mark Emmert to death if they cancel the season.

If the IRS reexamines their exemption, at best that’s billions of dollars of revenue a year that are now taxable. At worst, the NCAA is done.
Not sure they are done as the have a half billion dollars in cash. Changes will come, done is not one of them. The NCAA had its own Golden Rule and its called “We have the gold so we make the rules!”Throw one other layer of the onion at you. The NCAA is a 501c3 tax exempt organization. I don’t think they are going to go bankrupt, but I do think they could lose their role in this machine. The P5 conferences are halfway out of the door from the G5 conferences who are halfway out the door from the non-FBS conferences who are halfway out the door from football and basketball vs all other sports. Not sure they are done as the have a half billion dollars in cash.
