UNC System BOG officially gives itself power in athletic conference realignment

Public universities in North Carolina now have to get permission from the UNC System Board of Governors if they want to change athletic conferences.

There isn't one state in the country that relies heavily on an athletic conference for tourism than North Carolina does with the ACC. On the UNC Board of Governor's, UNC grads are outnumbered 15-9 to NC State/Other grads on the board, plus some of the UNC grads are affiliated with a lot of economic development/tourism boards with the state. There's millions of dollars that the state has tied up in keeping the ACC and their events to be played in North Carolina.

North Carolina may save the ACC for tourism's sake

State leaders spent millions to raise the profile of North Carolina as a sports event destination. Why would they cede that ground to Atlanta or Indianapolis?

The SEC and B1G can leak out to the press their desires for UNC to join their conference, but the powers that be in North Carolina have huge vested interests in keeping the ACC alive. That's not to say of anything about FSU, Clemson, Miami, or the Virginia schools from leaving the conference, but there just seems to many roadblocks for UNC to leave.

UNC is leaving the ACC and going SEC.
 
I understand the NCAA hate, but this is going to escalate after Judge Bubba sprinkled SEC holy water on Chambliss.

Watch… in the future some Bama judge wearing a Roll Tide hat is going to rule that a drafted NFL player that got cut, can return to Bama to finish his eligibility or give him an extra year, just cause.

Arkansas will say “ hold my beer” and and a Hog judge will then rule that a player can have indefinite eligibility, as long as they live on Campus.

This should have never been in a state court. They are ruling on eligibility that extends to interstate commerce.

The NCAA in future reviews of eligibility, should just state that the player is ineligible for games outside his state, leaving Judge Bubba’s impotent to rule and send it to Federal court as it should be.

1. Announcement within the next 15-plus months (on or before June 1, 2027). Member of the SEC by either Fall 2027 or Fall 2028.

2. Yes. UNC and NC State will leave in tandem. So will UVA and VA Tech. Politically astute to do so and provides the SEC (and its media partner) a significantly larger presence with two schools in those states instead of just one. Also, it stands to reason if VT and NCSU were seriously worried about getting left behind, there'd be a whole lot of very public discussion and saber-rattling from their presidents, AD's or other well-connected influential decision-makers. No reason to stay quiet if your arch-rival is leaving you behind in the zombie ACC

Does anyone see the TV networks pumping the brakes on expansion for a few years anyway? B1G numbers weren't great this year. Will UNC and NC State bring in enough football eyes to keep the current payout per team in the SEC? I am not so sure about that.
