MEGA Conference Realignment and lawsuits Megathread: Stories, Tales, Lies, and Exaggerations

Not sure on timing.

Ah, my apologies, I think I’ve asked you this question previously! Thank you!

Soooooooo, it looks like FSU & Clemson sued primarily for themselves.
Well, I don’t think they were suing on behalf of the entire conference, and they never said they were. But it would be disingenuous to say that the rest of the ACC didn’t benefit as well.

Clemson’s lawyers, however, negotiated a **** of a deal for them though.

I saw today, their is a Super League clause that came out of the lawsuit. If 6 ACC teams want to join a super league, they pay $72 mill or 50% of the buyout which would be $82.5 mill right now., whichever is the most. Those teams would join the Super League in football and other sports would still be in the ACC.

U’re absolutely correct in saying they never said this, but the conjecture & pontificating in this thread did.

Have the rest of the ACC members benefited from this? Yes & no; the bigger brands will, while the smaller brands will become more at a disadvantage. Clemson has asserted themselves as the quasi & de facto leader of this conference. Giving a singular institution vetoing power is unheard of.

So let’s put these buyout #’s in perspective & y it was foolish to insist we were leaving prior to 2030:

1. UT & OU paid a total of $100m to the Big12 to exit early, which was negotiated down by the conference from $160m

2. USC & UCLA chose to non-renew their membership to the PAC-12 creating a temporary dissolution of that conference, so they paid $0, but UCLA is on the hook for $10m annually for the financial hardship/domino effect imposed on Cal being apart of the UC system in athletics.

Now, let’s look at the exit fees from the ACC in these scenarios:

This season? - $165m/team
Next season? $147m/team
2027-28? $129m/team
2028-29? $111m/team
2029-30? $93m/team
2030-end of GOR? $75m/team

OU & UT were on the hook for $50m/per right before the end of their Big 12 renewal, & ACC teams r still on the hook for 9 figures all the way until 2030.

Knowing that the vast majority of Athletic Depts operate in the red, the only thing this lawsuit did was give Clemson more assertive power in the ACC, while giving others to either play ball or “attempt to come up w” more money than UT & OU, combined, to exit early if u have an invite.

As long as the smaller schools in the conference can get more revenue than the big twelve or lower tiers, have a path to the college football playoff, access to big time college basketball baseball and olympic sports, then they should be happy to keep the conference alive until we figure out the new normal in the 2030s.

Louisville, Pitt and Syracuse have solid sports traditions. Jim Brown, Tony Dorset and Johnny Unitas, etc. No one is talking about them for the P2 obviously, so their alumni need to do whatever they can to keep a seat at the table and the prestigious academic affiliation. BC and Wake will do whatever they are told. The Miami, Florida States and Clemsons of the conference should be thrilled to have an easier path to the playoffs and roughly equal revenue (we will see how it shakes out), and this settlement is a big win for Clemson and FSU. The problem will be keeping the schools happy who aspire for the P2, and might be attractive depending on the criteria used, but likely will not generate the additional revenue in the new model of the conference. Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, North Carolina - they didn't sue and now are arguably worse off.

You are such a bull****ter.

You told us the GOR was ironclad. It was not, and no longer exists.

Now you are spinning some nonsense about taking the ***** path to the playoffs, and how that will “keep the ACC alive for another five years”.

More bull**** from you.

Multiple ACC schools will announce in Summer 2026 that they are leaving. But then you will come back once again to tell us how the ACC has another 5 years to live, because Wake and Boston College will have an easier path to the playoffs.

You have been proven wrong every time. You will be proven wrong next summer too.

Time for you to take a job as an ACC coach, where you can use your “easy path to the playoffs” pitch on recruits who want to play 12 quality games against quality competition.

The ACC made France jealous with this unconditional surrender. The famed GOR turned out to be not so ironclad as we were told incessantly by some posters.

The ironclad folks = ACC TILL 2030

The GOR was bull**** folks = leaving DAY after lawsuit is DONE, we have B1G locked DOWN

Who was right? GET that crap out of here. noVaCane was RIGHT

My magic 8 ball says announcements in summer of 2028 for new conference entry for 2029 - 2030. Buyout less than $100M in 2029 and new TV deal time for B1G.
