MEGA Conference Realignment and lawsuits Megathread: Stories, Tales, Lies, and Exaggerations

UVA is a great academic school. My daughter got turned down from UVA and is going to be a Gator (God forbid - sorry, not paying UM tuition for her).

But they don't move the needle. They don't have fans statewide like a typical big ten school. If it happens, it's more for the research potential, academic prestige and geographic footprint than the eyeballs.

I've stayed away from this thread bc it's moved from the absurdly dumb speculation of a few years ago (Miami is DEFINITELY going to _____ in 2023, 2024, 2025, no, 2026!) to a really complicated unknown with the Senate & networks playing 3D chess. If Miami can recruit like they have been recently, then the ACC is such an easy path to the playoffs with great academic partners. Plus the unequal revenue distributions really help. But if UNC and UVA leave then the academic angle is dead regardless. Who knows? Nobody here, that's for sure. I thought nothing would happen until 2030 - now I'm thinking more like 2028 one way or the other.

Fun stuff. Miami will be fine either way
The only problem with this argument is that Miami can’t count on staying on the top in the ACC. Miami can’t broker its future on staying on top in the ACC.

Miami is about to go on a run, but these runs don’t last forever. Miami’s runs have been sporadic and spread out over 3 decades…..possibly 4 decades as long as things go the way it appears they are going.

With that said, any time Miami is not at the top of the ACC they would be losing an incredible amount of $ that is insane to lose. Miami needs to get into a conference that keeps them at the top. Miami needs to get into a conference that doesn’t force them to depend on U Health and billionaires to stay competitive financially as well.

You seem like you have special interest in Miami staying in the ACC. You have wanted to stay in the ACC throughout this whole topic of conversation. It really makes me wonder if you are an employee of the ACC or not.

No hes just slow on the uptake. From the artist of hits such as "the acc GOR is ironclad" and "no realignment till 2036" comes new hit "miami should remain in acc cause of easy playoff access". Not to mention playoff access isnt guaranteed or created equal but why ruin an oven mitt worthy hot take with facts.

I'm with ESPN/ABC on this- just not seeing the value in adding either, but particularly UVA. I know the SEC does things differently- nobody ever confused Ark, SC, Missou, or even A&M (when they were added) with being great football programs, but I just don't see why Disney would justify an offer substantially higher with these two additions than they would without them. These two additions may just add a couple of decent wins for the bigger teams, they aren't going to lead to more 10 million viewer games though. And the days of adding cable tv subscriptions are pretty much over with cable tv dying.

Thread was started June 30, 2022. Which would have been too late to join in 2023.

So show us where anyone predicted, with certainty ("DEFINITELY", your words and capitalization, not mine) the years 2024, 2025, or 2026.

And I'll be honest, I thought we had a shot at 2025 and 2026, had there not been various intervening events and developments. On the other hand, I never said "2034 at the earliest" like some people did.

Oh, and who predicted that the Grant of Rights was ironclad and enforceable?

So if we were going to award a trophy to the person whose predictions were the MOST INCORRECT, I'm sure you would win.

Playoff access isn't guaranteed, but have to balance that with the hit to playoff chance that would come from joining a 20-24 team P2 conference that is increasingly trending towards parity. Look at how Bama, UGA, and even Ohio State suddenly stopped looking like invincible juggernauts. I mean there was a time not long ago where you just penciled in one of those 3 as the nat champion, and it was an absolute shocker when they didn't make a deep playoff run. Level playing field means a lot of good teams are going to end up at 8-4 or 7-5 and miss the playoffs.

Obviously the bright side is that even if you miss the playoffs and finish with 8 wins, you still get a paycheck for 100 million. But... if a new (or merged *wink wink*) conference were to keep the ACC's "keep what you kill" playoff model and offered other incentives based on performance and viewership numbers, and then offered its top 4 teams 120 million+ as a baseline, the top team getting 140 million, the next tier down getting 100 million, and the bottom tier getting 60-75 million AND it is a pretty much a cakewalk to the playoffs every year, I'd be listening. There is certainly a risk of being in that bottom rung and falling behind the P2 by 25+ million, but I just don't believe there is any reason that Miami will land in that situation again. I would take the higher upside with the lower floor.

Plus the unequal revenue distributions really help.

Perhaps you should try to stay up-to-date on such issues.

The CFP changed its model. And the ACC was just given a smaller slice of the pie. So the windfall that Miami got last year will never happen again. At least not at the 2025-2026 numbers.

But thank you for trying (and failing).

Again, can we please dispense with this bull****. It's over, Johnny. It's over.

For the millionth time, it's not about "whose football team is better right now".

It's about who the people in the cities will watch on TV.

And the SEC wants a flagship university, not a Tech university.
Bruh…. Idgaf lol. Nobody is saying VTech will get the bid into SEC over UVA. I am saying I’d take them in over them. Honestly without question tbh

I think it’s pretty much a lock we are joining P2 (not sure when) but personally I think cfb would be better served by a P3 where we are the crown jewel of the conference. I
just hate being in a position where the P2 thinks it is doing us a favor and we owe our existence to them.

if you look at gross revenue last year:

B1G- 1.47 billion
Sec - 1.11 bilt
ACC - 826 million
Big 12- 710 million

Combined ACC/Big 12 would make 1.53 billion and be the highest revenue conference in America. Kind of hard to believe but it’s true- numbers show it could be a legit coast to coast conference and the highest grossing of them all.

Would have way more negotiating power with next playoff tv deal (2032?).

Yormark is a very savvy businessman. I am impressed how he brought back the Big12 from the brink of extinction. It’s probably going to be futile but I would not be surprised if he tries a Hail Mary merger with the ACC.

I don't think the states really matter any more, get the best brands- schools (with great football teams) that you can. Teams that draw huge numbers, are relevant nationally and likely to get an invite to the playoffs if they're good. And I don't mean us, I agree with you on the B1G. Schools like Southern Cal, Oregon and Washington, who draw the eyeballs outside of their own regions.

To be clear- I don't doubt your intel that UNC or UVA are their choices, but I just don't get why they think this is such a good idea. Are either UNC or UVA really going to draw more viewers if they're matched up against one of the SEC heavyweights than Missou or Arkansas already get? And, if you're ESPN, how do their additions add value to the deal? I think ESPN is going to pay the SEC substantially more in the next negotiation regardless of whether they expand or not because the SEC gets such huge ratings almost every week. I just don't see the value increasing an additional $150 million on top of what they will already pay if UNC and UVA are added.

Edit- having said all that, I do recognize there is value in keeping a territory away from a rival. Keeping North Carolina and Virginia away from the B1G is a valid strategy, but stil, the game inventory that ESPN would be buying looks the same to me, but maybe they can squeeze enough out of ESPN to make it work for everyone.

What if the SEC is viewing it as grab two academic institutions and cupcakes in one for football, but decent/elite baseball and basketball programs. Getting Bama, Texas, etc in Chapel Hill for basketball gets them a ton of eyeballs. UK/UNC play twice a year, that’s huge just in name quality.

But then come football season, instead of UGA having to play a pesky Vandy or Ole Miss, they get UVA and UNC. All the major games are still intact but now you have your end of year cupcake game replaced with an inter conference opponent. I’m reaching majorly with that thinking. But we can’t view realignment only through a football lens.

I’m no insider, but there’s something about a Miami/SEC marriage that feels weird. Feels like it’ll never happen. The only thing that makes me pause on that thinking, Saban loves Mario’s Miami. And I would be shocked if he didn’t have some measure of pull.

So on a thread about realignment developments, you thought it necessary to express nothing more than your personal feelings about UVa vs. VaTech, as if your feels were some kind of contribution to the thread.

Just haaaaad to do it, just haaaaaad to tpye a few words to tell us "VaTech >> UVa imo". So insightful. So necessary. You couldn't restrain your urge to ****porst.

Here, let me show you what a real facepalm reaction is all about.

:snoopfacepalm:

VTech >> UVA imo
You need to do some research. UVA is the "flagship university" for the state of Virginia. It is also much more exclusive and has a significantly more affluent and elite alumni base with significantly more ultra high net worth alums. If the SEC wants to move into Virginia ... they go with the "flagship" university for the state, and they bring elite basketball to the table, along with a host of olympic sports, and a football program that, while not being CFP contenders, can improve most likely with SEC affiliation. Va Tech would enter the equation if for some reason the SEC were going to take TWO Virginia schools.
