I love Josh, but I'm gonna have to disagree with him on this one point.

"Maximum participation" just means you try to cover everyone, including ND and G6, without causing the SEC to cry and pout over not getting 16 of the 24 slots.

As for losing the conference championship games, so be it. Originally, it was the 2 best teams in a 12-team conference, but if the P2 expands again (and having observed the obscene ACC tiebreaker in 2025), you could make the argument that the conferences should be having a Final 4 to crown a champ, which is just ridiculous.

Just crown a "regular season" conference champ and move straight to the CFP.

I have mixed feelings on how big the playoff should be but agree with everything else. The Conf championship games used to be the final gatekeeper for a trip to the title game or (for everyone not in the SEC) the 4-team playoff. They're useless if both teams are in, or if neither team is in the playoff. My concern with the size of the playoff is the guaranteed selections issue. Who picks the team is something we're always going to argue over and find fault with, but telling conferences you will have x number of teams, or telling ND you are in if you win 10 games or are ranked at or above a certain number, sounds like a bad idea.
They also have to figure out the Army-Navy issue. One of these years one of them will be in condsideration for the playoff, and having the playoff scheduled around that game is going to be impossible if if is played after or during (or even after) the first-second rounds.

yup and CFB, statistically, has the lowest participation rate in their playoff system of all the major sports. Many of the people crying about 24, were crying about 12 and were crying about a CFP at all. And at the end of the day, they are all watching in January. The sport is going to continue to grow, here and internationally, and CFP expansion will help tremendously.
