Concerns about Manny Diaz

Thanks @ Tim. There are a good deal of coaches that never played football. Don't mean that they don't understand the game. To somehow put his fathers political career as a reason to hate the hire, is just crazy.

We just hired the spoiled rich kid of the failed ex-mayor who, by the way, is a big enemy of Miami football. The kid has never played a down of football, has never fielded an elite defense, and was fired from the biggest job he ever had for doing a terrible job

Throwing out reasons 3, 4, 5 and because they are idiotic so assuming it's a troll job. His father's political career has nothing to do with his success as our defensive coordinator

to point 1) I fully agree with you. in the other thread with advanced stats he has averaged approximately the 25th best defense but never considered "elite" and that concerns me, especially when playing top offenses particularly in the big 12 when he had the talent but still didn't produce amazing results.


to point 2) Chizik just gave up 700 rushing yards to baylor. Yet he took the UNC Defense and completely turned them around this year. they averaged giving up 40 points a game last year this year 20. One game doesn't dictate a guy's career. It was concerning yes but it was a long time ago and he has shown success since so I don't think it should be such a focal point to our fans.

Does it concern you that Diaz has never played football? It concerns me.

How well does he evaluate talent? Do position coaches and players respect him?

Who on the defensive staff is going to do talent evals?

IIRC, Mike Leach never player a down of football either and he is not the only one. Look I'm not thrilled about the hire but there is a possibility that he could use his past experience and the foundation and support he will have at UM and create something pretty **** good. Secondly, The Grim Richter isn't here to play around. If Diaz isn't able to sieze this opportunity and make it work, he will be promptly fired and replaced by someone better. Of that I am supremely confident. Richt knows **** well that this hire is a calculated risk and I'm certain he will have no problem dropping the hammer if he needs to.

Sorry for what exactly? Also what Leach has won or hasn't won has nothing to do with my post. He was just a random example of a college head coach who never played college football. The rest being David Cutcliffe, Hugh Freeze, Paul Johnson, and Chad Morris.

I'm not some Leach fanboy but it seems as if it was your intention to marginalize his success as a coach. Not sure why because Leach has has a solid career to this point. He won't get confused with Saban, Meyer or Patterson as an elite head coach but he has had a significant impact on modern offensive philosophy and his team's are usually solid despite being flawed.

Seems to me it's more common among offensive coaches, though. How many elite DC's do you know that never played?

Not saying it's impossible for Diaz to overcome that, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't concern me. I think you develop an instinct for the game as a player that helps you later as a coach.

As for punishing the son for the sins of the father, maybe that's wrong....idk. I just know that when I hear the name Manny Diaz as a canes fan it makes me cringe. Like many of us, I had great memories of the old Orange Bowl and I don't want the son of the man responsible for tearing it down connected to the program in any way.

Maybe that's just ugly and vindictive, or maybe it's just me being a fan.
 
I don't like the hire either. Other than him being average everywhere he has went I just can't get that BYU game out of my head. My neighbor was a huge Texas fan. He went there and everything. I was sitting on his couch watching that game wondering why the **** Texas wasn't stacking the box. They stayed in their base defense the entire game and never made any adjustments. Can't get that game out of my head.
 
Not the hire I hoped for but that said, it's not fair to hold the kid responsible for the sins of the father.

Everyone wanted a 4-3, attacking defense. It sounds like they went hard after Aranda, and would have had him if Steele hadn't bolted to Auburn. With decent talent, he's had good defenses. He'll have Kuligowski coaching DL and access to better talent than he's had in the past. He'll have zero excuses.

Plenty of coaches have never played football before
 
Mike Leach never played. Hugh Freeze didn't either. Neither did David Cutcliffe or George O'Leary.
 
No offense but the Orange Bowl thing "cmon man". What does his father's decisions have to do with his ability to run a defense. The BYU game, every DC had a bad game or more. Rob Ryan is considered a great defensive mind and he had a bad season.
 
Not that it matters one way or the other but Belichick never played a down of football. He learned from reading a **** ton of books. Like I said before I don't like the hire but I will take a wait and see approach. He will have at his disposal a bunch of athletes that look to fit the 4-3 scheme really well. He also has a really good DL coach under him and hopefully a stud DB coach coming from LSU.

Paul Johnson, Dennis Franchione, David Cutcliffe, Mike Leach, and Mark Mangino, all pretty successful coaches, never played college level football.

How do you think his defense would do if he had Alabama's roster?

I have watched a lot of his games since we hired him and I like it way better than what we've had here the last 5 years.

They were shutting down Alabama for most of the game. Their safety went down with an injury and Henry busted a 75yd run right pat his backup.

We are going to have to get A+ safety and MLB play in th D though. His 2nd year at Texas he lost his MLB and safeties and the backups couldn't handle it which caused a lot of the problems.

They lost a lot of starters from 2014 and his D put up better numbers than Geoff Collins whose now the gators DC.

Let's just see how he does before crying about the hire.
 
So 3 of your 5 concerns have nothing to do with being a successful defensive coordinator?
