Decided to go for a run tonight after a long day of work and changed it up with not listening to music and downloaded the CaneSport podcast. One caller talked about Fentress being on the field over Carter/Gayot. Gary responded that Fentress is a smart guy (med school) that doesn't make a lot of mental errors and that has picked up the defense faster than the others. Caller asked a great question of "what does that tell you about the scheme when you have world class athletes that can't see the field and 5'8 walk-ons do?"

Gary confirmed that the scheme is something that Golden/D'Onfrio genuinely believe in and agreed with the caller that the scheme is not designed to their personnel but to what they believe in. The scheme is to be said a very complex one and that the top athletes are having a hard time pick up which is why they aren't seeing the field as much. Bottom line, the staff is more willing to put inferior players/athletes on the field instead of adapting to the strengths of the better players.

The first thing any good manager/coach/boss/director does is identify what tools he/she has and creates their program/system/plan/scheme around it and not forcing their ways to their staff's weaknesses. Not that we didn't know any of this but for those that continue to admire Al as a great "CEO" are witnessing bad business 101. If a change is made with D'Onfrio he must relinquish the defense to the new DC or else it is a waste of time and another year of mediocrity. Expecting to see McCord and T Harris in the slot as nickel backs tomorrow night.......

Think players. Then plays. Corch gorlden said that in his first ******* interview and has lied ever since.

I remember that fsu dc who is at uga now said something to effect of he makes his defense as simple as possible for his guys while seeming complex to the offense with regards to blitzes and such. We seem to take opposite approach. good grief

When i watch videos of D'Onofrio speak at these clinics and showing tape to back it up, the concepts he's discussing do make sense. I'm sure many of them do actually work.....at the NFL level where he played. Then again, the guys at the NFL level are the best of the best and have unlimited time through camp and the season to learn, as well as endless number of coaches to help. College kids don't have that luxury. Many kids receive poor coaching in HS, then have limited time to practice each week. With such a steep learning curve, mistakes are made. Look at Bama's struggles earlier this year. Bama is so young on defense and those kids were having trouble with their complex system. Those kids are elite 4-5* kids with 2 tremendous coaches in Saban and Kirby Smart teaching them......and yet they struggled. Things that make sense conceptually do not always translate well in reality.

That being said, some defensive calls we've seen this year are still unexcusable and completely on the coaches, like LBs and safeties 6-10 yards off the ball on short yardage and goalline plays, CBs 8 yards off and bailing at the snap, and LBs consistently wide over slot receivers (either bring in the extra DB or have the LB split the difference between the T/TE and the slot). Oh, and the frogstance......i can't take that.

Bamas coaches cut to the heart of the matter within 1 month. They coached their players up and blasted Texas a&m! Meanwhile after 4 years of D'no and AG we can't get a 1940s double wing-t offense off the field if the Coastal depended on it!

career losers, Fentress doesn't make MEs...what he also doesn't make is plays and tackles. Losers

Sounds a lot like the Glenn Cook days.

That's why I miss Jedd Fisch.

He adapted his offense to the skill players at his disposal.

When Jacory looked half decent through the first few games, I knew he was a great coach.
