For years here on CiS the argument has been that we don’t have enough talent to dominate, and while Mario has no doubt improved our talent, it’s also been proven more than ever this season that coaching, scheme, development of players and play calling matters a lot.

Under previous corching staphs, great talents like Toney, Bain, Mesidor, Thomas, Poyser, Pringle, Daniels, Justin Scott, Scott, Lucas, Frédérique, etc., would have been wasted and not developed.

Corey Heatherman is our best coordinator in years. The guy is a savant.

Our offense has looked completely different after the SMU loss, and that’s not by chance. It looks like Mario knew at that point that he needed to let Dawson cook. I would still like to see us play with more pace, but we have definitely improved.

I’ve been as critical of Mario as anyone, but we finished the season strong and deserve to be a playoff team.

Dawson's press conference after the SMU loss changed everything. You can't tell me Dawson didn't hear the noise and didn't self scout after.
That is definitely a possibility. But judging from the argument between Mario and Dawson after that 4th down run where Brown got stopped, and what a couple of posters that were sitting by that sideline said that they heard, it sounded like Dawson was tired of calling the same BS run up the middle.

After that game we started seeing the guards pulling (along with Maugoia) on some runs, and more outside runs overall with Pringle. We have also seen a lot more throwing of 1st down and he hasn’t been afraid to go into his bag for great trick plays and blitz beating calls on important downs.

Defensive Line has definitely taken another step with the Coaching and Development! The defensive coaching is Very good! If we can continue to incorporate the recruiting with the coaching and development I see a yearly playoff run.

It’s a shame it took playing ourselves out of the ACC championship game to change things up. I think we might have been victims of our own early season success. We saw the chinks in the armor and many of us said that the overly conservative approach and predictable play calling could really end up biting us but when you win games, nobody wants to get critical. You can only play not to lose so long before you eventually shoot yourself in the foot.

Us playing simple and rushing 4 was too much for Pitt. Just that basic adjustment alone is more than we could ever expect of past coaches
