7 year extension is kinda misleading. It’s a two year extension and a raise; after two years of coaching there. I had originally thought this was an extension from his current contract that ends in 2031. This new deal ends in 2033.

The buyout is favorable to Alabama yet not insurmountable for an FSU, Wisconsin, NFL team, or whoever else would pursue Deboer if he goes anything other than 11-1 or 12-0.

2 regular season losses and he is on the hot seat again tbh. 3 or more and it’ll get ugly.

The deal doubles the buyout for DeBoer to leave for another job: $10 million through Jan. 31, 2027; $8 million through Jan. 31, 2028; and $6 million through Jan. 31, 2029. His previous deal signed in 2024 included buyouts of $5 million, $4 million and $3 million over the first three years.

The truth is while he may not last at Alabama, he’d be an A+ hire for 50+ P4 programs. If he were to have lost to Oklahoma a third time in a row, he’s probably Michigan’s coach right now. He’s less likely to get fired rather than just bought out by another program.
