U think so? He did extremely well at Troy before falling flat at the P4 level. Thought based upon his G5 pedigree, he would fit well.
He did well at Troy because he had Jon Sumrall running his Defense.
Troy is also in a much weaker conference in the Sun Belt. The American as far as the G5's go is at the top of the food chain.
That was also pre-Portal era where team building was much different & talent level competition had much larger disparities.
In the NIL-Portal era, teams especially on the G5 level are structured a lot different because you can build or be ransacked all in one offseason. So, it's a lot harder to manage a team on the G5 level nowadays with having all the P4 vultures circling your roster on a constant basis.
Neal Brown is more Hal Mumme than he is Mike Leach. He's very similar to Dawson in terms of his Offensive philosophy, which works when you have a smart QB & dynamic Slot WR, but when you don't it falls off a cliff fast.
I don't think he's going to work at North Texas because in order to succeed there you have to be to scout at a high level & find an under the radar QB that you can build the Offense around. Neal Brown doesn't believe in that theory. His Offense is system based & not really personnel based. Meaning, he doesn't think he really needs elite players, the system will work regardless & as he found out in West VA, it doesn't work like that in today's game.
North Texas needed an Offensive dynamo who specializes in maximizing under utilized talent. A guy who find Diamonds in the rough & gets them to play well above their means. Someone who understands the fundamental core principles of the Air Raid/Veer & Shoot philosophies and why it's integral to their team's success. It's the identity of the program & the reason why they're 11-1 with a chance to win the conference.
