Recruiting: Dead period over, Hurricanes coaches hit the road | Canes Watch

On Thursday, NCAA rules permitted coaches to get back on the road recruiting after a month-long “dead period.” Unlike many schools, Miami let it be known through social media where its coaches were going.

It’s unclear exactly which players the Hurricanes visited, but it is certain Tyler Byrd was high on the list.

In the morning, coach Mark Richt and receivers coach Ron Dugans visited Naples to see Byrd, a cornerback from Naples High. In the afternoon, defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph were also in Naples.

Byrd, who flipped his commitment from Florida to the Hurricanes last February, is rated No. 2 among all multipurpose athletes by ESPN (he also plays receiver, but UM wants him at cornerback) and the No. 11 prospect in Florida. Rivals rates him 18th among cornerbacks and 36th in the state. Some aren’t as high on him; 247Sports has him as a three-star recruit, 27th at his position and 42nd in the state.

Byrd was regarded well by the organizers of the Army All-American Bowl, which selected him. He starred for the East team, registering three tackles, an interception, a pass break-up and a blocked point-after attempt he ran back for two points.

The previous Miami coaching staff was also interested in Byrd’s teammate Carlin Fils-Aime, a running back committed to Tennessee. It’s possible the staff saw him, too.

Other notes from Miami’s first day back on the road:

— Richt’s second stop Thursday was Palm Beach County, where he visited former Miami commit Ahmmon Richards, the four-star receiver from Wellington High, according to ESPN. Scout reported running backs coach Thomas Brown visited Richards earlier Thursday. Richards will visit Alabama next weekend, according to 247Sports.

— According to 247Sports, Richt planned to visit Sam Bruce Thursday evening. Bruce, a four-star receiver, is UM’s top-rated commit across all recruiting websites. It will be his first face-to-face meeting with Richt.

Bruce also met with Dugans:

— If Brown was in Palm Beach County, it’s likely he met with running back commit Travis Homer. ESPN West Palm reported Richt stopped at Homer’s school, Oxbridge Academy. Homer is rated No. 3 among running backs by 247Sports. Miami is also highly interested in 2017 linebacker Vandarius Cowan of Palm Beach Gardens.

— Before heading to Florida’s other coast, Diaz recruited locally in Miami. Among the numerous possible targets: Miami Central safety Jamel Cook (FSU commit), uncommitted Miami High receiver Keyshawn “Pie” Young and UM-committed receiver Dionte Mullins, defensive end JoJo Jackson and safety Cedric Wright of Gulliver Prep (2017 running back commit Robert Burns also goes there).

— Defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski headed to New Orleans. Apparently, he convinced four-star cornerback Shyheim Carter to take a visit this weekend. Kuligowski’s likely targets in the state were defensive tackles, such as Glen Logan, an LSU commit who has a great deal of interest in Miami. As noted by 247Sports, Louisiana defensive tackles Rashard Lawrence, Edwin Alexander, Stephon Taylor, Briston Guidry and D’Andre Christmas–Giles, as well as cornerback Kristian Fulton, could be Miami targets. Kuligowski, who was known for recruiting success in Texas in his decade-long stint at Missouri, is a big fan of Dallas-area defensive tackle Marcel Southall. Perhaps a trip to the Lone Star State is coming after Kuligowski finishes in Louisiana.

— Offensive line coach Stacy Searels was in Washington, D.C., possibly to see Jauan Williams, a 6-7, 300-pound tackle from Archbishop Carrol. Williams, a four-star prospect, is the No. 16 offensive tackle nationally per 247. Also in the Northeast, Miami is interested in three-star offensive lineman Lucas Niang (New Canaan, Conn.).

— Three first-time assistants took their first recruiting trips as college coaches. Before heading to Naples, Rumph was in Bradenton, where IMG Academy has a wealth of FBS talent. Safeties coach Ephraim Banda was in Orlando. According to 247Sports, he may have seen Carlos Becker, a four-star safety from Kissimmee-Osceola. He later took a visit to Niceville, home of safety Romeo Finley and receiver Eli Stove (Auburn commit).

— Quarterbacks coach Jon Richt went to the Daytona area. Miami’s 247Sports affiliate said he checked in with four-star wide receiver Tre Nixon (Viera High). One of his stops might have been been Mainland High in Daytona, home of Gators-committed defensive end Jachai Polite, UCF-committed running back Adrian Killins and offensive lineman Marcus Tatum, who recently committed to Tennessee.

Even though its only the FIRST **** day of recruiting for this staff...

Its so Refreshing to see proven coaches like Richt, Manny , Kool, Diaz and Dugans out there excited and putting in work ALL OVER the STATE of MIAMI. These cats are all over the **** place... and its only 415pm.. Ridin in Donks and ****...

I mean.. we had Paul Williams in ******* Delaware in a **** Electric Prius

JC

Great to see the staff working hard and actually having a plan to cover the state as thoroughly as possible. And actually recruiting out of state in area's of expertise where there are actually good football players.

Mother of God!!!!

When it comes to talent I think Georgia and Louisiana are the only states that would compete with us. The cajuns from the boot ain't no joke. Don't let Standish Dobard fool yall. I think he's going to ball out this year just because of richt play calling alone. The boot has major talent all over.

Cali ?

Nope!

Check this Ohio is more comp then California... if I had to name top 5 states to compete with FL

Georgia
Louisiana
Texas
Ohio
Pennsylvania

Hon mention

D.C
California... (they more Hollywood then gridiron)
I disagree. I don't see how Penn can be in the same discussion as Cali, when they've dropped off worse than any other state that's a football power (both in talent and quality of teams). Those Penn powerhouses from 15+ years ago are almost all no longer nationally relevant.

LA metro alone, has more national powerhouses than the entire state of Pennsylvania. They also have what's known as the toughest district/conference in the country in the trinity league and the toughest playoff circuit with the Pac-5. Teams like Long Beach Poly, which have been one of this countries top producers of NFL talent, are usually bounced out of the playoffs early.

I respect your opinion Barboni. But i disagree when it comes to the talent . There is still a lot of Pennsylvania surprised me when I was staying in the Cumberland valley a year ago. Harrisburg reading Lancaster Altoona had some grown men out there. I wouldn't be surprised if Pitt challenges us every year.

Now I will say I'm my judgment from California is all based from me playing juco out in San marcos. Watching reggie bush at helix was awful. Corona had the best squad at the time they were centinial i believe. They had a running back from there that went to Hawaii with Colt Brennan.

There were like 4 or 5 schools that looked legit to me from San Diego to LA. Majority of the kids in the LA area going to the Catholic schools were on that Matt leinart Hollywood lifestyle tip. Can't really speak on the bay I do think fresno and Bakersfield have more talent than san diego. I'll know later this year though when I move to the bay and see for myself.

I'm from SFL and have coached in SFL (optimist, Hs, and for the SFE), but I keep up with Cali football (specifically LA). I have cousins that have played and coached over there. I've also gone to clinics and have seen games and 7v7s live in SoCal. The Hollywood catholic school narrative doesn't apply, when states like Ohio and Jersey are dominated by national powerhouses that are almost all catholic schools. Every powerhouse in SoCal now recruits and talent density has been diluted at public schools like Dorsey, Carson, Dominguez, and Crenshaw, when they're being offered a lot more opportunites from those private/catholic schools. The best hood team in SoCal is a private catholic school in Serra, which has had a 5-star recruit almost every year for the past 5 years (Marquise Lee, Adoree Jackson, etc...). Only Centennial, LBP, Mission Viejo and Westlake are publics that are pumping out prospects and putting a decent product on the field. Corona Centennial is a legit public school powerhouse. San Diego schools are ******, but they have a few prospects.

Here are highlights from the last time that west coast teams played against Dade county schools, excluding the Pahokee vs Olive Branch (MS) game. That MNW team and Booker T team had a bunch of prospects and got beat.

Those PA powers almost never win any of their top national games. Ohio, Jersey and DMV teams play them every year and the Pa schools fold. I remember Cocoa and Manatee going up there in 2010 and whooping both of their opponents. There's definitely talent, but it's not Cali.

I remember mission Viejo and Westlake being on TV a few times. If I'm correct TJ mowry aka Smart Guy was the leading rusher in the area at the time (granted this was 2003-2004). I get what your saying though. I do like Gardena Serra now majority of the other schools weren't good at the time when I was there. The games I did watch the elite squads were playing scrubs. Kind of like that Maddox kid they boosted up from California who signed with FSU to be average. Florida was undefeated still against California in those high school games. Georgia was competing or beating us.

I'll give L.A. This Desean Jackson was/(still is) that dude. His daddy made him an arrogant sob but he backed it up tho

Everyone asking about rumph and Tampa. Could be there to talk to Nate Craig and Jayvaughn Myers

bruh, no offense, but ur str8 tripping right now. I live in Cali and I saw Concord De La Salle set the record for not losing a game. I saw Long Beach Poly smoke teams outside the state of Cali consistently. I saw Compton Dominguez smoke teams outside of Cali (shout out to my bruh Richard Sherman). I saw Matre Dei, Bishop Amat, Crenshaw, Dorsey, Serra, Notre Dame, Garfield, Harvard Westlake, Corona Centennial produce a grip of NFL players.

There's a reason why ESPN show cases Florida v. California on the grid-iron.

Top States in Order, imo:

Florida
California
Texas
Louisiana
Ohio

New Jerseyand DC is trying to crack that top 5 as well, but I got Georgia slightly behind Ohio

I'm from south Florida and use to think like you, until I seen players from Cali play live. Completely changed my mind about Cali athletes. Cali has elite athletes.

I've had the privilege to see Florida boys play on the HS level and Cali boys....I'm completely enamoured at the talent pool the State of Florida has to offer, in particular So. Fla....but, Cali boys can play too. Everyone think L.A. is hollywood, but it's the gang bangin' capital of the world...so a lot of these parents put their kids in sports at a young age as an escape from their surroundings. I don't even want to go through the list of cats you will never hear of b/c they made a wrong decision that would be in the NFL right now. Florida and Cali mirror each other, imo. But I'm still taking Florida athletes in regards to football over Cali, but Cali is definitely 1B.

Ayo Rell you visit Anaheim/Anaheim hills much?

son, do u want to be the next Jaquan Jarrett? GTFOH. so excited about the future. I was initially a Butch guy who didnt want Richt but i like what i see so far.

Bradenton/Sarasota area has IMG, Manatee HS, Braden River, Venice, and there are about 5 other HS around there that are known for producing DI talent every year. Some of those schools like SRQ Riverview and Bradenton Southeast have fallen off since IMG and Manatee have taken off

Got jack from Palmetto as well. Booker in Sarasota used to be a good one that's where Sam Shields came out of I believe

Correct you are about Booker and Sam Shields.

Dis man got it, right here. Howevah, I wouldn't put DC up there at all - even the metro DC area. Heck, I'd put the tidewater area above the DC area. I'm not real impressed with the DC area football schools.

I'd leave your top 5 as is and I'd include Georgia in there over NJ and DC.

I agree 100%. I've lived in both areas, and still live in VA. DC has Dematha and Good Counsel but the Tidewater area is more of a football area. Not like SFL in quality and quantity but no place is. On a smaller scale, Phoebus, Oscar Smith, Bayside, Ocean Lakes... always sending talent up to Division 1.
