You are right, Harley did struggle early but he did something to improve his game while under the same leadership, coaching and scheme. BTW, despite Harley being known for speed, he doesn’t play fast on the field. He isn’t explosive and doesn’t run away from defenders. Despite that, has done well to carve out a niche for himself. I believe Pope has vastly superior athleticism to Harley, I really do hope he takes the leap
Harley and Pope are kinda similar stature wise. That extra year gives Harley an edge. Harley is a good athlete who struggled with hands and confidence early on. Our poor offensive coaching and quarterbacking didn’t help.
I think Harley is closer to the guy who broke that long touchdown against Louisville than to a bust.
Remember people were saying Braxton Berrios didn’t play like his 4.4 speed. All he did was become a Hurricane legend his senior year.
We desperately need the coaching staff to create an atmosphere of competence, hard work, and accountability. The accountability includes the coaching staff. They have to design plays specifically for the guys on hand. No more of the hopes and dreams bullshyt.
We were an effective offense when we did this. The bottom fell out because we didn’t build on what worked.
I keep going back to the under center, 3 step drop slant Pope caught against Florida. Teams gave us those underneath routes all game early in the season, but we didn’t use them effectively and the offense got bogged down.
Once they realized we couldn’t block and Enos couldn’t effectively call an offense on the fly, they gambled to take away the short stuff and squeezed the life out of us.
That should have never happened. With a better designed scheme and playcalling, we had everything we needed to be more productive. But we destroyed team morale setting the team up to fail and then arrogantly throwing them under the bus. When it fell apart, it completely fell apart.
It’s the 10-80-10 rule. The players need to work harder. But they need the leadership from the staff to believe that the work will pay off. The leaders bring if regardless. It’s the 80 percenters whowill make or break you. We haven’t had a staff that properly leads 80%ers for a long time.
