I think there's way more nuance to coaching WRs than this board seems to accept. At any level. A lean in one direction, a tendency created, foot placement, etc., can haunt a DB's dreams.

Hope this dude can help our guys with some of the finer points, at least. Apart from running in a scheme quicksand, things looked really sloppy toward end of year.

A lot of them look like they how no idea how to get open, yes the system was basic as **** under richt but they still should have to get more open than they were. Stubblefield can improve that I mean He broke records at one point at Purdue being one of the all time reception leaders in college or something like that so he knows how to get open

If he coaches well everything else will fall in place. The WR room needs a serious shakeup as to what they are taught. They all quit last year

This is true, but doesn't apply here. Obviously some kids can just blaze past the DBs or are so much taller/can jump higher that they can just high point every ball, but If they can't catch the ball in high school they aren't going to get D1 offers.

Do they really think these guys were dropping everything in practice because they were trying to catch with their feet?

Yeah...but the issue was in with his head, not in knowing how to catch. Had he not known how to catch, no one would have ever recruited him.

Exactly. 100% correct. It is beyond funny. If kids couldn't catch the ball by the time they were freshman in college they would not be playing at Dade community, let alone, UM. Not only that, but do they really think someone like Dugans who was an NFL receiver himself and coached for many years doesn't know these mystical tricks to catching the ball? If there was some magic technique to create Jerry Rice hands than a team like Bama would pay millions per year to land the guy, but guess what even Bama WRs drop balls in practice.

That Hankerson stuff has grown into an incredible myth. Hankerson made all kinds of circus catches before he worked with Duper. His problem was he dropped a couple easy passes and it got in his head. It’s like when Steve Sax couldn’t throw the ball to first base.

Duper is no WR genius. He has no secret recipe. Maybe Hankerson gained some confidence from working with him. Who knows? But he certainly didn’t teach him how to catch a football.

I agree it was a mental breakthrough. I also think our entire WR room underperformed especially given how much talent was in there and a new WR coach should be able to make a big difference combined with a competent OC.

Mike Leach always had 2-4 tennis ball machines out at practice firing tennis balls to the WRs. One right after the other.

It’s a great drill for developing hand eye coordination, and Leach’s WRs never dropped balls.

Clemson is another team I’ve seen do this - and I’ll be damned if their WRs don’t have unreal hands every year.

Being that tennis ball machine to practice and fire those suckers in fast.

Well if you lose interest then you lose focus which causes sloppiness and I hope the board listening about the mental part of catching. If you think you have brick hands then you’re going to have brick hands. That’s why it’s so important to hit the jugg machine and to work with your QB because if you know where he’s gonna put it then you know where your placement has to be and if you’re hitting the jugg machine then it’ll lead to catches. Why do you think Juice Landry and OBJ are always working with a jugg machine in their training videos?

That’s not true. You have to learn where your QB likes to put the ball on routes or in most college players cases where the offensive coordinator wants the ball.

I don't see any recent retweets from Air Force on his twitter page. Additionally, I have to admit I think it's kind of funny you're counting his likes. Is this really the world we live in now?

I just looked at his likes and you have to remember he probably spent the last 2 years recruiting those kids to AF. I think it's cool to have a coach who believed in what he was pitching to the point he is still excited when the kids sign. It's called integrity. I hope he would and will do the same for Miami.
