How are the guys looking? We have a lot to get them to forget and learn what we want them to do. They are doing well.

Re Corn elder: he can be the #1 that we can put on anybody. Reminds me of Duane Starks. Will hit you. Don't have to keep an eye on him.

Re other guys(not a lot of bodies): it is about being in shape. The first 4 practices they did well. They were run down on saturday (maybe due to heat) but there is no excuse. We have to be in shape. maybe jog around campus.

Technique: tremendous amount of bump and run b/c that is what I based my career on. Guys doing well. But foundation is bump and run. (lots of technique being used)

Front 7 how does it help: Front 6-7 are commiitted to the run. They will stop the run. Our corners will always have help. They just need to use leverage. We are going to tackle well and use good leverage (unlike last year...his words).

Nickel/dime (are you using safeties): we have gotten into nickel yet. Depends on how corners do well. Want Johnson to play CB due to athleticisim. Carter and Jenkins can do it as well *play nickel.

Malik Young: we expect him to help us. Any guy we are recruiting is a guy we need to play right now. He is one of those guys. He is an athlete with ball in hand with good size. Our defense is not complex so SFL boys can come in and play and show athleticism.

Wideouts and speed: we have good speed and possession receivers. Offense being put in is about big shots and we need the WR to break one. Coley is good and DB know they have to run with them using good technique.

Second question about receiver speed: its a chess match between DB and WR. We have our technique that we will use and each day we challenge each other. WR are running crisp routes and learning how to do that.

Compare to last year what is the difference the team is emphasizing:
On defense: we are focusing on leverage and tackling. We will be one of the best tacklers.
On offense: being a touch team that can run the ball. OL is challenging defense and being physical. We are tougher.

Turnovers: we are working on getting them. It comes from confidence and defense knowing what is happening. Also need to have fun, that brings turnovers. Young kids need to stay within defense and turnovers come to you, you don't need to chase them.

AQM: he is tremendous. He is that guy in the locker room. carries himself well. Trent harris also doing well. Solid guys that hopefully will spill over to corners.

-6 players at corner, only Elder has experience. Getting players to forget old technique and learn new technique.
-Corn can be a no. 1 guy. Reminds Rumph of Duane Starks -- great ball skills, will hit you.
-Redwine, Jackson, Mayes, Henley, Young coming in. Heat on Saturday was tough on players but they are in good shape right now.
-Doing a "tremendous amount of bump and run". Rumph is excited because he made his career on it. Players are learning basic technique, but once they have the foundation they can build on it.
-Front 4 and Front 7 will help determine how DBs play. Corners will always have help. The biggest issue is tackling better, getting in position.
-"As of now" team has not used safeties at corner, really gotten into nickel. But Jaquan Johnson will get to work some corner. Rayshawn Jenkins is athletic and Jamal Carter are as well.
-Malek Young can contribute right now on this team. Good athleticism.
-Defense is simple enough that kids can just go out and play.
-Good amount of speed at receiver and good possession receivers. Coley is amazing, receivers are doing a good job, running nice routes.
-Competing every day with Dugans coaching their respective units.
-Defensively, leverage, attacking and tackling are going to be biggest difference from last year. Offensively, focused on being tough and being able to run the ball. O-line needs to be physical and has reacted well. Overall, tougher, intent on running, and defensively leveraging and tackling.
-Constantly working on turnovers (defense) and protecting the ball (offense).
-Wants players to have fun and says he doesn't always see them having fun on film.
-Teams need to stay within the defense and the plays will come to them.
-AQM has been tremendous. Carries himself like he's "that guy". Excited to see what he can do over a full season. Trent Harris is creating havoc as well.

Do you guys think Ced Wright will be able to contribute as a freshman? If so, in what capacity?

nickel and dime packages at the most on D and probably a good special teams player. I don't think his ceiling is as high as some but he has a high floor and tackles well. He'll contribute next year in some capacity because of his tackling ability.

Sounds like kids forgot how to have fun under the last coaching staff. So glad it's a new day.

Rumph mentioned turnovers but remember we were one of the best last year in T.O. ratio. Dont throw out the baby with the bathwater--whatever the staff taught them last year worked. We had 25 takeaways and only 14 giveaways.

Man, Canes football cannot come soon enough. For the first time in 8 years, I'm super juiced about the upcoming season.

And majority of those turnovers came against D IAA, DI subdivision, and DI back up QBs and teams. Come on now.

"We have a lot to get them to forget and learn what we want them to do"

Please do make them forget everything Golden/Dorito taught them.
