From the Herald:

“I think they've done a lot of good things throughout the year,” D’Onofrio said of his defense. “We won seven straight games. We had to win a lot of games in the fourth quarter. We had to hold a team [North Carolina] to comeback on the road. But I do think in some of those [wins] there were some [troubling] signs.

“I told you we weren't tackling. I told you we weren't causing fumbles or taking the ball away. Those were things that weren't fixed and those are the same things I was telling the defense. Again, it's hard unless you're doing like we are everyday and seeing every single play and knowing what the calls are and the responsibilities are. It's been the missed tackles and somebody cutting an assignment, cutting somebody loose. We had too many today. I've been saying that since I've been here.”

He blames the players. He throws them under the bus. Not just for last night, but for their bad play the entire year. None of the wide open receivers and 3rd down conversions were a result of his scheme or play calls. They were all blown assignments. Don't you worry guys, he's been telling the team what they've been doing wrong all year, but they just won't listen. I mean, I really feel bad for the guy to have work with such stubborn players who won't listen to him when he's proven time and again that he knows what he's doing, and that his defense can shut down high powered offenses as well as the I-AA Bethune-Cookmans of the world.

If you've been saying that bs for the 3 years you've been here to no avail, D'onofrio that's even more proof that it's time for you to go.

I just hope Golden is man enough to admit his mistake and go in another direction on D.

We fielded the worst Hurricanes D in our history last year. This year we're sliding towards that after a strong start.

He needs to fire Dorito and adapt. It's that simple.

Eventually, you get to the point where it's his fault either way. If he's coaching them not to cover anyone and to leave receivers wide open all over the field, then that's his fault. If he's coaching tight coverage and great tackling and stripping the football and the players aren't listening to him after 3 years, then that's he and his boss's fault too.

You can use the "they're not following instructions a couple of times, but you can't use it for 3 years because that makes you just as ineffective a teacher as it would if you're teaching all the wrong things.

You know a coach is sunk when he starts dealing quotes like that 3 years into the gig. Equally disturbing was Al's quote about "it's up to them (the players) what they want to be." It's HIS fcking job to push the buttons. Otherwise, why's he taking checks if it's all up to the players?

As the co-architect of that atrocious D, it's going to be tough for him to admit that. Those 2 appear to be inextricably intertwined.

That pretty much tells me that it's either too complicated (I doubt that) or he's a lousy teacher.

I've been struggling not to post for the past two games. This **** is just too frustrating.

I think it IS too complicated.

It's a mix/hybrid D that they're trying to teach to college players that actually have to go to class.

I'm sure it works in the pros, but they're just not picking it up in Miami.

He tried to take credit for the 2 picks tracy had at unc. The players have never been a believer in him you can tell. You have had the same problem for 3 years is telling. Tracy clashed with him last year because tracy was trying to play press man, and robinson because he was playing like a 3 technique.

The irony in his own statement is that he's been saying it since he got here... and yet it isn't fixed.

You don't keep banging your head against the wall if it starts to hurt.

Seriously. 3 years and we're still making the same mistakes.....so what exactly are we paying you for? You're the ******* coach it's your job to teach the players so that they don't make mistakes. If nothing has changed in 3 years then what the **** is the point of your existence?

What I don't understand is, how can they look at the results and not think a change is needed? And by they, I mean Golden. I don't care if this is the defense he wants to run, he's going to be the one ultimately judged by the wins and losses. I mean, at the end of the day, you can't blame"freelancing" and "missed tackles" on every team going for over 500 yards against you. Especially when two of them (UNC and VT) don't have good offenses, with one (VT) being horrible. I can't believe I was duped, and bought the lack of talent, youth excuse last year. I mean, it was true to an extent, but we never should have been that bad. We still should have had a defense in the 50s or 60s. A Miami defense should never be 116 or whatever we were last year. This defense, if it keeps this up, will not finish in the top 75 in total defense. So, yeah, they "improved" from last year, but still horrible, especially in year #3.

The old Einstein quote applies--the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If you pair this with the Golden interview regarding "trusting your teaching now more than ever," it's going to be continued defensive crumbling since the players (apparently) aren't following the very teaching that he's referencing.

Realistically they can only change so much at this point in the season. If they can't identify the need for a drastic defensive overhaul once the offseason begins then it'll be their undoing.

It's nothing new...they've always thrown the players under the bus...I was troubled by that attitude last year and assumed it was just inexperience now it just ****es me off. stop making ******* excuses....as has been said ad nauseum, at this point it's your fault either way.

Interestingly, if you take out the Savannah St. game, we would be 75th in total D.

Good call.

We will all find out soon enough, if Al has what it takes. The saying is 'Al just gets it', well he does but you have to 'get it' but also execute. The one thing he can do is recruit pretty well. Next year is year 4 and if we arent much better than this next year well its time to move on. The good news is that as long as this class holds up, the talent here at Miami will be much better than what Coker and Randy left it at. From a talent perspective we are no longer a total dumpster fire, and the job will be much more attractive than the other 2 go arounds. Its time to put up or shut up for him, and we will find out soon enough this off season whether he fires Dorito. The AD must be proactive on this one though, and recognize if/when they have a lame duck on their hands(Golden), no twiddling of the thumbs. There will be a bunch of talent on this squad in 2015, lets not waste it down the drain like we did with Randy in 2010......

The only reason some of this has "worked" this year (a la Florida) is because of either a horrific, horrific QB, or we have enough talent to gut out wins against the most pathetic team UNC has fielded in a decade and a worthless Wake team that FSU and Clemson beat by 50 and could have beaten by 70.

We have talent, and I actually believe the younger players are light years mentally tougher than when Golden stepped on campus but two things bother me still today.

1) The OP original argument about the scheme is the problem and our coaches wont fix it

and

2) The nonchalant attitude of the senior QB about a loss that basically shoves our pathetic *** to some worthless bowl in San Antonio or Memphis or Lawrence Kansas or whatever gawd forsaken bowl tie in the ACC has for division chumps. Did he not care that the Orange Bowl was right there for the taking? Dumbass...
