Looking at how CMR handled Perry, we should be proud of our coach:
  • Perry was not ready last year coming out of Ocala Vanguard HS. He Redshirted him and now he has 4 years to play. Allowed him to become acclimated, despite knowing the limitations that Rozier has (he even told Rozier in the spring of 2017 that he was never going to play for him, unless changes were made).
  • Did not rush him, a mentor a father figure. The lesson of suspension was more important than starting. Will bet he had Perry’s family engaged.
  • Starting Perry against LSU at AT&T Stadium could have mentally and maybe physically damaged the kid. Heck if Perry started and we lost due to bad QB play, many of us would be saying that CMR is playing “his recruited QB” ahead of victories.
  • Perry needed to gain weight. He is now 195 pounds, looks thicker and strong. The facemask pulled is a great example, he never gave up and actually continued pushing forward.
  • He allowed Perry to come in after the 3rd series so he could see the game/speed/defenses.
  • Played Perry at home, more of a controlled environment.
Expect the lessons to continue in and off the field! You can see the respect that Perry has for CMR, during the post-game interviews regarding the intersection, Perry was quick to say Coach wasn’t mad or screaming, just said “don’t make a bad situation worse”, more coaching.

We have what appears to be a great QB in front of us but make no mistakes CMR is in charge and Perry is buying into him being the mentor. Expect the life and game lessons to continue, some of us hungry for immediate victorious gratification might not like them.

Kudos to the coach and correctly to Jon for developing Perry

Great post. I also think the lesson will continue as far as working Perry into the game. I expect Malik to start on Thursday and CMR will work Perry in . This will allow Perry to keep adding to his experiences and make him a better QB at the end. Clearly the kids are patient with the process - we fans need to be more patient, too!!
