They are who I thought they were. Probably the least talented group there since Dabo has been HC and the their playcalls are very predictable with film study.

Miami's defense came out and defended the run well but Diaz's conservative 3rd down zone calls blew the game open as usual.

My biggest concern heading into the offseason is not QB, not Richt's offense, not the OL. It's Diaz. He needs to review the season on film and chart the (lack of) success rate of these zone calls. And then abolish them.

My god - Manny did not have the DBs Satan has - in fact the second team corners at Bana are better than our first string. If manny had that type of talent at corner he plays press coverage - period

Their offense is extremely basic. Bryant is a solid player, but the way he started the game against us was ridiculous.

I agree with your post wholeheartedly. The talent was there for a much better defensive performance to close the season.

The problem i have is that every quarterback that we played looked like a joe Montana when before us they were average , true freshman at Pitt, Wisconsin QB,we couldn’t get UNC off the field,I don’t know the answer or why it happened, it’s just concerning and i Like Diaz a lot

Canes had more offense against Clemson, then Clemson had against Bama.

I agree - during the Shannon years we couldn't cover a TE running wide open in the middle of the field. This last part of the season 3rd and long was a deadly down for the Canes D

If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it’s a duck. Diaz is the problem...and many of us knew he would be the problem as soon as this hire was announced. It terrified many of us

With Diaz as DC we’re basicially stuck in a Dorito echo chamber. Learn to love it and a adapt to it, because Diaz ain’t going nowhere.

Patently false. If you can't play press-man with Jackson, Delaney and Bandy then you never will.

But suppose your argument is correct - was the defense more successful when they played zone or press-man?

I think this is the main reason why college teams rarely play cover 2. You need a MLB like Kuechly that has the range to get depth and cover the void in the deep middle.

Miami's current issues with zone coverage are:

  • No reroutes/jams/collisions near the line of scrimmage. The rare time I see a reroute it's soft and ineffective
  • Lack of communication, obviously
  • Slow eyes, covering grass. This was embarrassing under the prior staff and still hasn't been fixed
  • Since many love the talent argument, I'll cede that the LBs besides McCloud lack the athleticism to cover, and the safeties besides #4 are stuck in quicksand most of the time. But this just feeds into why I'd play 2-man or single-high with pressure looks

The irony is my Texas fan friends told me Diaz's aggressiveness would be problematic when it's been the exact opposite so far. I hope it's not Richt meddling. I may need to watch some old Texas film this offseason.

You should watch more than Texas film. Watch the La. Tech film against top opponents. Watch the Miss St. film against top opponents. His fire zones are stale.

The problem you and others seem to be missing is UM version of Diaz actually tried man at times. Bowl game against "inferior" WRs. We got spun there, too. Calling him D'ono, a guy who refused to try something else and tried to win with passivity and the offense's help, is absurd.

His zone calls need revision and we can all agree on that aspect.

Diaz definitely make questionable calls but it’s also a fact that we really need an infusion of talent at db

There's a world of difference between perfect throws leading to tough contested catches (one of which was a push-off) vs. receivers running free into 15 yards of open space. If you're gonna get beat either way at least make it difficult. Wisconsin had maybe 1-2 legit open throws against man coverage where the DB wasn't in phase.

Zone coverage for QBs is like a layup or free throws for a streaky shooter. You let a QB make easy completions on 3rd and long and it gives him (and his team) confidence and gets him in a rhythm just like the slumping shooter getting to the line. Now he's throwing dimes into tight man coverage and beating the panicked blitzes that ensue so it looks like nothing works because you've made an embattled turnover machine feel like an All-American.

I'm not advocating to try man coverage. I'm advocating for a commitment to it.

He's seemingly gotten spooked when we get beat in man. It's happened before. When it happens, he reverts to fire zones. I'd suppose the theory is he'd rather force throws into windows (albeit our windows are enormous sometimes) and have them do that a few times. Perhaps our DL or the blitz will get home once and we get the stop. A good example is the FSU, where I absolutely hated what Diaz did. We could have played 2-Deep Man Under and their QB might not have completed more than 2 passes over 10 yards.

Diaz's zone coverages were actually worse this year than last, but it's been mentioned elsewhere: we don't seem to pattern match. I reviewed every conversion on 3rd down during the bowl game and we basically got beat by man coverages and our zones fall apart when we don't get home (because the blitz fails or we get held).

It's like the Georgia game.

Oklahoma dominated the trenches on Offence and Mayfield looked a million dollars. Then Georgia stopped ******* around on defence, went single high safety and just out athlete'd Oklahoma on the outside.

It's about the Jimmys and Joes.

Oklahoma came into the 3rd quarter with a different game plan. Which is why they started scoring again in the 4th when they reverted to the original plan.

As stated, Diaz needs to change some things but let’s not act like he didn’t try different ideas throughout the season. We adjusted well in numerous games after half time. Our problem is that our secondary just isn’t very good. How many times did we make average QBs look great. Bryant was what 12 for 12 to start the ACCCG?

My argument was that Bama has tons more DB talent period - we had a transfer bust, a 3 star and a 4 star --- big drop off

Be interesting to know how many of our starting 22 players would even be on Bama's two deep. Both sides of the LOS.

People acting like we never ran zone at Miami on defense. And when our DB's get cooked they come on here and trash guys like Delaney and Malek, Redwine, etc. Sometimes you have to play to your personnel. Any DC that sits in man all game is gonna get gameplanned against and roasted.
