It’s funny how little football people know on this site.

Just to put it simply for everyone, here goes.

For Manny‘s defense to work he has to have the right kind of players. Really good ends/D-lineman that can get upfield really quickly, and linebackers that can cover for the mistakes/gaps that this leaves. It’s all about disruption, causing turnovers, and getting the offense off balance.

He had that in 2017 and he did not have that the last couple of years especially this last year. If your linebackers are below average in a Manny Diaz coached defense, you're truly fūcked. It wasn’t that complicated. Compare our line and their performance from 2017 and even 2018 to this year. And then compare our linebackers from 2017 and 2018 to what we have this year.

Again, it’s not that complicated.

It all depends what kind of personnel he has at Penn State. If he has the right personnel he’ll make a splash up there.
No linebacker will wanna go to Penn State. Linebackers in that scheme is like a black hole. You will never be good in that scheme.

Moved back to PA a year ago after 45 years in MA. Everytime I see someone in Penn State gear, I offer my condolences and bring up his statistics. Some say he is great. Some say he fired his DC. That is when I point out that he was the DC this year when sucked. Don't have the heart to tell them when I grew up, a long time ago, Penn State was your safety school when applying to colleges.

I live in the heart of psu country. For the last week everybody's been asking me my opinion of Manny. I just laugh at them and walk away.

I just don’t see it. Wisconsin smash mouth football will expose him like it has 2 separate times. Let’s not even think about what Ryan day will do that defense 🤣

I simply don’t see his style translating well to big 10 unless he starts fresh and takes a good look in the mirror and say my defense sucks right now it needs to change
Yeah i mean our defense's have literally been atrocious to run games.... welcome to big10 football where just about everyone other than OSU is trying to go 8 men in the box and run 40 times a game... If he doesn't change his defensive philosophy idk how his system will be successful in the big10

There was an article on his defense where he said the gaps left open behind the LB would get smaller as the players understood their assignments better.

Didn't think of getting better athletes to make up the gaps. This is why he would play the seniors over the more talented underclassmen.

Admittedly only know a little football myself so help me out with a few things :neonu: brotha ...

1) Was Diaz free to tweak what UM did defensively to better fit his personnel or was "Manny's defense" the only available option?

2) What level of responsibility does Diaz hold for the linebacker play, which, as you indicated, seemed to get worse instead of better under his watch?

3) How much (if any) of the blame for the inconsistent effort, shoddy fundamentals and bone-headed mistakes we all saw from our defense over the last several years lies with Diaz?

4) If it's simply having the "right kind of players" to make Manny's scheme work, would James Franklin have been better served hiring a recruiting savage to run Penn State's defense instead of a guy who lost his job at Texas and Miami because his units couldn't stop a nosebleed?

he runs a convoluted fundamentally unsound scheme, no? unless he has all world players, a smart OC will figure his smoke and mirrors show out and expose him.

amiwrong?

Answer the questions yourself.

You must be the guy that missed my point, I’m the guy that tells it like it is. Or at least the way I believe it is.

If you understood my post as somehow defending Manny, reread it.

Brilliant strategy, too, since playing a guy who (kinda) knows what he's doing but honestly ain't worth a **** always leads to big-time success.

No wonder we were exiled to the Weedeater Bowl and the Cheetos Bowl the last couple years

I had a very good pressed pork pickle and mustard sandwich today. I think they call it a havana sandwich

It’s only a Cuban if it also has ham and Swiss cheese, and the pork has to be mojo pork. Only on Cuban bread of course, if it’s on that eggroll sub type bread, then it’s a media noche.

Any 305 guy can tell you that, you don’t have to be Cuban to know this. I mean pretty much anybody in the 305, even the 954, it’s not just the guys from Westchester, Hialeah, and Kendall that know this.

Diaz will not tweak his defense for the BIG10/12. He believes that it’s the perfect defense for that regions style of offense 😂

My bad.

Good to know we agree Diaz pretty much sucked at Miami and he'll succeed at State Penn if and only if he inherits players with the talent and acumen to do exactly what he needs them to do.
