If we went 7-5 we would still have been disappointed but we probably wouldn’t have lost to MTSU and our season wouldn’t have been the worst we’ve ever seen as Miami fans so yes that season would’ve been better.

If we don’t hit those lows though do we keep Gattis? 🤮🤮🤮
Don’t u eva talk like that again on this board

That last part is the real problem for us fans. 20 years of needing things to be as bad as humanly possible for changes to occur. Imo, if we went 7-5, but we dominated 5 games, and barely lost 2 or 3, it would feel way different. This is college football, your record does not tell you what you are.

Idk man, 48-0 in the last game at the OB was pretty bad. Losing 100-0 to Kansas State sucked. Losing at home to USF wasn’t fun. I don’t know if you guys noticed, but the last 20 years have been awful. Were parts of last year as bad or worse? Maybe. But again, who cares? None of it is acceptable. Did you really feel better giving up 550 rushing yards to UNC than you did losing to Duke? Maybe fractionally? But again, who cares? We’re not in the business of feeling kinda sorta better being embarrassed than we did during other embarrassments. It’s all unacceptable. So it’s where do you go from here? Let’s win some football games. My feelings and your feelings about the levels of depression we feel are irrelevant. 5-7, 7-5, 6-6, it’s all ******* embarrassing. Do something about it.

I try to be objective on all topics on this board.

I think there’s several things to consider when it comes to last yr and our 5-7 record that needs to be addressed on both ends:

1. Culture: I know those who don’t really roll w/ Mario as HC think this is a buzz word, however if u listen to any coach on any level that’s taking over a new team, that’s one of the first things that’s mentioned. Miami’s #TNM culture was deplorable.

2. Scheme: The scheme didn’t fit the personnel. It was painful to watch

3. Personnel: It was clear some guys on the roster were not Miami material either mentally or physically.

4. The Program: There was a reason why Herbstreit called us out on Nat’l TV. The program have rested on its laurels for yrs now, not completely vested in any of its athletics, particularly football.

HOWEVER, w/ that being said, here’s what works against Mario:

1. Coaching: If u go back & watch those games, Mario as a HC made several rookie mistakes that hurt the team, namely in the TAMU game:
-Bleeding the clock in the 4th when we were down 17-6. We had the first possession in the 4th w/ 14:20 to play. We took **** near 6 minutes to score 3 points to make the game 17-9.
-Our defense holds & we get the ball back w/ a little over 7 mins to play. We then bleed the clock, AGAIN, to 3:20 JUST to give the ball back to TAMU; mind u, we only have 2 T.O’s at this point.
-We kill all of our T.O’s on TAMU’s next possession & get the ball back w/ 0 TO’s and 1:16 on the clock. At this point u would think we would speed up the game; NOPE. Not only r we slow, but in TAMU’s territory w/ 58 secs to play, JK4 is stopped short on 3rd and 10 in bounds, and there’s confusion! No one knew what to do and we bled another 25 secs just to throw an incompletion! Ball game.

That TAMU lost was on coaching, period. TAMU was a depleted team w/ suspensions & key defensive players getting DQ’d for targeting; yet, we were the team that looked disorganized, & Mario looked very uncomfortable in the tight moment.

2. Predecessor: Mark Richt took over the Wefense era, & had to use his own $$ to help push us in to the 21st Century of Athletics. This program was 3 yrs removed from the cloud, & he also took over a program who suffered its most embarrassing home loss in program’s history, while firing its HC mid season. Yet, Richt quickly turned around Miami in 2 short yrs being a shell of himself.

3. Peers: Elko took over a worst program than Mario, yet Mike had Duke, DUKE, immediately as not only a formidable opponent, but a winning team. Here’s what’s even scarier about what Mike did at Duke; not only was he a 1st time HC, but out of Duke’s 4 losses, their avg. margin of defeat was 3.8 points! Then u have a veteran coach in Dykes who takes over a TCU program that went 5-7 the season prior & 23-24 over the last 4 yrs & IMMEDIATELY turns them into a CFP contender.

So to me, I think it’s reasonable to have cautious optimism. Yes, we can say Mario had/have a lot of work to do to change the culture here, but the counter argument will be 5-7 was not necessary b/c there were minor coaching adjustments that could’ve been made to change the outcome.

If u’re going to say, “we need to give him 5 yrs” and use Butch as a guideline, well the problem is apples & oranges. Butch took over a NCAA Scandal team that received **** near the death penalty. With that said, only The 1997 saw the true devastation. He still went 8-3, 9-3, 5-7, 9-3, 9-4, 11-1 w/ one hand tied behind his back. Was it at the Nat’l Championship level the previous coaches created? No, but we were still competitive w/ limited scholarship players. Mario did not walk in to the same situation; further that situation was 25 yrs ago; the game has changed, & no program’s coach need that long to turn around culture, today, & the data proves that.

Let’s see how the season plays out for 2023-24. Let’s see how recruiting plays out for 2023-24. No need to throw dirt on Mario b/c he was successful at UO, but there’s also no need to excuse, rationalize, circumvent 5-7 last yr, either. Nor, can Mario continue to see in every interview what he did at a previous stop. That’s old news & will eventually fall on dead’s ears. I will say this, & I stand by this:

If 2023 is a season in which we find ourselves struggling w/ identity, struggling against inferior opponents, getting blown out, then it’s completely justifiable to start ?ing the complete direction. If we fulfill the “lofty” expectations of winning at least 8 games this season, then we should all feel much better moving fwd.

yeah we’ve been really bad but 5-7 is a new low. Idk why people are acting like it isn’t. Definitely was not necessary to go 5-7 last year including blow out losses to MTSU and FSU to turn the program around.

Can’t change it now so I’ve moved on but pretending like it was necessary or it’s just as bad as going 7-5 is so fcking stupid I can’t even believe people are saying this lol

It’s why I had the parentheses around “lofty expectations.” I agree w/ u, w the caliber of coach + roster + schedule 8 wins is a joke, but I’m trying to set the bar low so disappointment doesn’t creep in. I also agree how we look in those 8 games will matter, too, which is y I said trouble finding an identity or struggle against inferior teams.

💯
Bolded is just reality.

When you hire a talent accumulator and not an innovator/expert, especially one that isn't afraid to put his finger prints on the offense/game plan, the timeline just gets extended. We don't just have to be more talented, we have to wait until we are WAY more talented to routinely beat most teams.

Tamu and Clemson out talent us, that is two losses. FSU and UNC are close enough to us in talent that playing what will be two of the best QBs in the country this season on the road makes me pencil those as Ls as well. I also am not ready to expect a win vs every team we are better than on paper yet due to new schemes on both sides of the ball.

I think our over under is perfectly placed at 7.5. 7 would be disappointing, but that probably only means we lost one game we were Vegas favorites in. 8 wins and we either upset someone, or beat everyone we should. Higher expectations are not rooted in reason.

7-5 and winning a bowl (8-5) would have been a **** of a coaching job with last year's roster. No sunshine pumping here believe me, I was just one of the few that said 5-7 was a real possibility for that roster/team.

The only reason I'm holding out hope for this kid is because Rohan got Flowe to go to Oregon with Mario but if this kid wanted to come here he'd already be committed. Imo.

He’s probably enjoying the NIL auction , but since it’s gone this long I’m not to confident.
But I’ve been wrong before, one thing if he does come , I’m not sure I want to hear from him he was always a Cane and he bleeds orange and green.

I’m not sure I would believe him at all

Your either a Cane or not this weakens my confidence every day in this youngster.

Need that context and look. Yea record matters but most can't see something being built unless you have that record improvement. Me I won't go by record I need to see. Cause who the **** knows what if all the qbs stink it up and it cost us. Anything can happen, I'm more interested in the youth cause they could be here when we get to where we want to get too.

I believe the wildcards are both new coordinators and how quickly the players can adapt to the new schemes. Both new schemes seem more user friendly to our roster.

I agree there are only 2 teams on our schedule with more talent -Clemp$on and 8 & 4. We’ve got them both at home. UNC and the semenholes are away with equal talent. Mario has upgraded the roster and there are obviously a couple holes remaining but overall, it’s better than last year.

If we can remain healthy, 8 wins is very doable. Couple of breaks here and there, and 9 isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
