Chase Smith Vs USF

I was so high on Chase Smith in that 2021 class, I actually thought he was a better prospect for his position than James Williams or Leonard Taylor, injuries have kept him off the field, but I think this season he’s looking like more of what I expected

I'm happy for the young man, he has faced a lot of adversity but that "highlight" clip wasn't very good. I'm rooting for him and apparently he is finally healthy so lets watch him get better

He's not All ACC but dude is playing as well as we need him to. That clip could have used the sweep that he chased and dragged the defender down. That looked impressive, didn't think he would catch him.

My expectations for him for so low that getting quality reps out him in the 2nd/3rd group is an absolute bonus

Kids a cane legacy been hampered with injuries but he definitely knows his assignment and is showing good signs of some improved athleticism to make plays

It’s only 4 years ago we had a walk in in ragone taking these same reps if not more

Here is my question. Did any of our other LB’s do better than Chase? If so, what were their grades for those of you who gave Chase a “B”.
Not one LB played better than Chase, there was a series where Chase made or was in on every play. He flashed like an all conference LB and he should play the most snaps in the LB rotation. I believe he just needs more game time reps, he hasn’t played a lot of football and it shows when he is late. More reps can take his game to the next level.

There's always those players that you wish you could squeeze one more year out of. Chase Smith is that player, this year, for me. He's a converted WR, so we always knew it would take some for him to develop. Him and Popo have been a pleasant surprise in the LB room
I’m sure he will be granted a medical redshirt.

If y’all want to throw up a cut of the other lbs I’m happy to watch that for sure; my opinion shouldn’t be valued for anything from a corching perspective of course.

Just observed in the focused cut that he was consistently where he was supposed to be, flashed a few times for sure, maybe didn’t make a 1 on 1 where the more critical folk would say he “could have done more” but the cleanup was there, as they are supposed to be in this defense.

I was pleased with what I saw watching during the game, executed assignments. Was he a game changer that blew **** up to earn an A? Again undisciplined eye but I don’t know that I’d go there with it. Was satisfactory play for sure.

My opinion as well. And maybe no LB deserved an “A” but then likely no one on the defense deserved that grade other than Bain and possibly Mesidor. My point was the same as the point that you made so much more eloquently; Chase Smith looked pretty good, AND, was involved in a number of big plays; fumble recovery, 4th down stop, blew up the attempted pass by the WR, tipped pass.

I honestly don’t recall any play of real significance made by any other LB. Toure caused disruption leading to a sack of the QB, but he missed the sack. Wes made a nice play tackling the RB in the flat.

Without the benefit of the focused cut I would have the same notion regarding Bain. And Mesidor met him at the quarterback several times from my recollection.

He’s got to finish the plays once he’s in position. The team does swarm to the ball so him being in position is good enough and disrupts the play.
