Notre Dame?s Cierre Wood says Miami quit in second half of... | www.palmbeachpost.com
ORAL GABLES — Notre Dame embarrassed the University of Miami 41-3 on Saturday night at Soldier Field in Chicago, then rubbed it in after the game.
Tailback Cierre Wood, who had 118 of the Irish’s 376 rushing yards, said the Hurricanes quit in the second half.
“They were all upbeat and jumping and all that stuff in the beginning [of the game],” Wood, one of two Notre Dame players to rush for more than 100 yards, told ESPN.com. “But when you smack a team so many times in the mouth, eventually they’re going to want to stop playing, and that’s what happened today.”
Whether UM laid down in the second half Saturday is open to opinion. What is certain is that the Hurricanes’ defense seems incapable of stopping any opponent.
After playing relatively well in the first half, UM’s defenders folded in the third quarter by allowing Notre Dame to run roughshod. The Irish rushed for 197 yards in the quarter, turning a 13-3 deficit into a 34-3 lead.
Notre Dame (5-0) entered the game 95th nationally in total offense, averaging 351.2 yards. Against Miami, the Irish piled up 587 yards of total offense and put together four touchdown drives of 81 yards or longer. They also recorded 34 first downs, the most ever by a UM opponent.
During their last three games, the Hurricanes (4-2) have permitted 1,670 yards and 114 points. Name a defensive stastistic and UM is sure to rank near the bottom of the nation’s 120 FBS teams, including total defense (118th), rushing defense (116th) and scoring defense (101st).
