Chad Thomas Combine

Horrible time for Chad. Was predicting 4.7 then again, looks like he put on some more weight.

His time is right on par for the players at his weight.

Kentavious Street 4.88u, DeShawn Hand 4.84u, Holmes, Speeks in the high 4.8s.

I'm more interested in his 3Cone and shuttle numbers. That will determine if he's an edge guy or more of a stack end.

I think he's a versatile guy. Plays a lil edge, a lil stack.

4.7?!! Why on earth would you think he would run that fast? I love chad but he never showed that kind of burst here.
Best case scenario. Was hoping he got into decent enough shape to run that fast. Worst case imo was a 4.8.

280+lb DEs rarely run better than mid 4.8. Thomas is not a pass rush specialist, he's a SDE. He'll never be a double digit sack guy but right now he's a three down lineman for a 4-3 team.

Lmao at anybody thinking his 40 time is important. Dude doesn’t have to run 40 yards to get the QB.

People really showing their football ignorance in threads like this.

They actually think unless an end has freak spread like Clowney, he’s worthless in the NFL. What did the highest paid end in the NFL run in the combine that’s also a cane.

Hint: it’s higher than 5.0 and the answer’s above.

As Mark Twain once famously said: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.”

He actually didn't say that, but your point is correct. Most people in here should lurk more and post less.

Chad looked very good in the rip drills. Probably the best technique in his group, and very aggressive.

That was easily his strongest drill. I thought he would run in the 4.8s but as soon as I saw him it seemed obvious 4.8 wasn't going to happen. Chad was definitely thicker than his playing weight here.

It's possible he made the decision that speed simply wasn't going to happen even if he dropped weight so the best move was to bulk up and fully resemble a strongside end. That's not as glamorous but those guys can have a long career. The Dolphins traded for that type last year in William Hayes, already into his 30s.

Richt apparently knew something at first glance when he bemoaned the lack of speed on the roster. The 40 times last year and this year have been sub par. Even guys like Njoku and Coley underperformed expectation last year, followed by Walton and Chad this time. These have been excuses and adjustments galore but when the trend is one way then the reality is there as well.

I don't expect it to continue once Richt has a roster full of his hand picked guys.

For those interested, the link below shows that Calais Campbell ran a 5.11 at the combine.

He may be the best comparison to Thomas for a (somewhat) recent DE out of Miami. He measured 6'8" 290.

I remember watching that combine. Campbell was dropping into coverage in drills and understandably looked very awkward. I think his stock dropped from the weight gain with him adjusting to playing at that size. I knew he was a stud top 5 talent from his Soph year but a lot of people let recency bias fool them.

Not that his 40 should matter but it was the11th fastest. And most of the dudes that were quicker were lighter than he was. Still think he’s a mid rounder. Maybe late second or early fourth. Will really depend on how many ends go earlier. If there’s a big run on DEs in the early first I could see some team reaching up for him. And obviously the opposite. If other positions go early he may wait longer.

The problem with the Campbell/Thomas comparison is it's only looking at combine numbers, where both were just average. But on field production, there's a huge gap:

Campbell (3 Years) - 83 tackles, 39 for a loss, 19.5 sacks
Thomas (4 years) - 51 tackles, 26 for a loss, 10 sacks

Thomas has been good with flashes of greatness, while Campbell's production was on a different level.

I feel like after the combine, the teams that like him before probably still do. And the teams that didn't or were on the fence about him, weren't given any reason to like him. Just kind of stayed even.
