CFP Week 1 Rankings - Nov 3

If you could boil down the absolute nonsense of these polls into one team it would be Tennessee. They have played:

Furman (2-7): 56-9 W
GT (2-6): 45-24 W
Kennesaw St (2-6): 42-9 W
Texas (6-2): 17-20 L
Auburn (4-4): 24-12 W
Arkansas (3-5): 24-17 W
Alabama (6-2): 26-10 W
USCe (5-3): 24-27 L

How is this resume any better than Wake's? You have to be punished for losing. You have to. And right now, in the SEC there is absolutely 0 punishment for losing and a MASSIVE boost for beating 1 of the 10 ranked SEC teams. Kentucky is #6 and they lost by 28 points to the best team they played. That's better than Notre Dame? Or Wake?

I don’t think it’s really a conspiracy. The committee people honestly believe the SEC is that much better. They’ve bought into the narrative that’s been going on for decades.

None of what we’re seeing is surprising. The SEC is graded on a hard curve. Also, all losses for SEC teams are forgiven. That’s why you always hear them talk about who they’ve beaten, never who they lost too. For everyone else it’s the opposite. Your victories don’t matter because they think your conference is inferior, but you get killed for your losses.

That seems like a win win then, no? So in your scenarios, there still is no reason to go B1G.

We stay in the ACC, ESPN pays us more money, and have an easier path to the CFP, or ESPN pushes for us to go to the SEC.

So… no B1G.
i see no scenario where we end up in the SEC. You’re reading into something that isn’t there. Will end this convo because it’s fruitless and future based anyways

The problem is overall the SEC has been generally good. The get fluffed a lot though.

Agreed w/ the bolded.

the main “conspiracy,” part per se, although they say they don’t do this, is that these rankings are clearly made with the remaining schedule at the front of their minds. Which is why Texas Tech being only two spots ahead of Houston and BYU being 9th is based on preventing more than two XII teams from entering the field. Otherwise, why aren’t BYU’s wins over ND and Arizona putting them in a stronger position compared to #IU w/ zero ranked wins or even Utah who has only beaten Houston; which TT, who has beaten Houston + Oregon State + Arizona, didn’t get much credit for.

They don’t care about any of this. 2023 the conferences weren’t even the same teams as right now; and coaches were all over the map. Including that year doesn’t make much sense and distorts the numbers. Even so, FSU beat LSU in 2022 and 2023; the best two teams of BK’s tenure.

The ACC went 8-6 against the SEC last year and it’s completely irrelevant already. The B1G is 2-7 this year against the other 3 P4 conferences, the big XII is 4-7, and the ACC is 6-9. The ACC is 4-1 against the B1G this year and that’s irrelevant. Duke beat Illinois and is 6-2 while Oregon is ranked despite losing to Illinois; USC barely beat Rutgers is ranked 17th; Wisconsin is extra mid and beat ‘SC.

No one is saying (at least from what I’ve read) that the SEC isn’t really good; they’re saying that doesn’t justify ten teams in the top 25. The B1G went 6-4 against the SEC in 2024 and 4-3 against the SEC in 2025.

The SEC is 5-0 against the ACC but two of those wins are NC State vs Vandy (won by 4) and Louisville vs Ole Miss (won by 3). Not exactly major referendums. Alabama vs FSU the past two years are a dead-on tie when you add up all the points (67-67). What does that really say about Alabama — the 5th ranked team? GT vs UGA the last 3 years have been nail-bitters. The ACC is 2-3 against the XII this year yet only has 2 ranked teams compared to 5 from the XII; and both Arizona + Houston, like Indiana, skipped out on scheduling any p4 OOC matchups.

This whole process makes no sense because there is no consistent criteria. Should the order be based on who they think the BEST teams are? Or should it be based on which team is "most deserving" of that ranking?

Notre Dame is ranked 11th based on what they've done.
Most analysts agree that there are not 10 teams better than Notre Dame.

So.. if we beat ND, we'd be getting credit for beating #15 or whatever they drop them to.

But in truth, we would have beaten one of the 10 or so best teams in the nation.

When the games are played the ACC generally ***** all over itself. The gap is closing but all we have to go on are the games (btw that was all regular season data). They (cfp) are undoubtedly biased by history, preconceived notions and SEC SEC SEC. I’m not saying it’s right but when there are people involved it going happen. There is no way they are evaluating based solely on this season results. Even some of their data probably has data from previous seasons or talent levels baked in along the way.

ACC could do itself some favors and actually win some meaningful games. UL beating Ole Miss would have gone a long way in this discussion. But even then they go on to lose to a team that’s fired corch.

Yeah, but the pac12 exploding and the big12 rearranging itself are pretty BFDs. At least 2024 is a clear starting point of a new era; as the major conference realignment happened that year while the 12 team playoff began then too.

If I started from 2016 it’d boost my argument and be an even ten years; and the acc went 10-4 against the sec that year which shrinks these margins tremendously.

2017, 2018, 2020, 2023 and 2025–either conference is only above .500 by one game. 3 times SEC, twice ACC. That’s not a major accomplishment.

The same thing can be framed by saying: The ACC has beaten the SEC H2H 2 out of the last 3 seasons yet doesn’t recognition for that. Additionally, the B1G has beaten the SEC H2H in the last two full seasons (2024 + 2025).

We can lose this game and still make the playoff, Notre Dame can’t
Notre Dame will definitely still have a chance of making the playoffs if they lose (barring a blowout). Lot of teams ahead of it that will likely lose at least once more and I don't think they will punish Notre Dame much for losing to the No. 1 team.

They will have their work cut out for them and will need help, but its still college football...

Ehh It’s more likely a team behind rn them leapfrogs them, the committee is clearly showing they are not hesitant to punish ND severely for losing to the only two teams with a real pulse on their schedule..

Anyone remotely connected to the SEC whines about the hardship of playing 9 games and “cannabalizing” the conference. The narrative about their “good losses” was established before the first kick.
