CFP system. why not 8 teams just this year.

Or if Bama loses to UF in the SEC title game....but that's not going to happen, we all know better. even if they lost, they'd bump Notre Dame if they lost to Clemson in ACC title...which would create another uproar. I agree with OP...Power 5 champs plus 3 at large and call it a day. PLZ PLZ PLZ put in the Cincy and BYU teams so they can have their shot on national tv to show what they've got.
They would get beat like they stole something 🤣🤣🤣😂 yo said Cincy and Byu....lol more jokes tonight please

OP started with 8 teams, then said 16 would be perfect, what are you doing? Fvck it. Make it 32, have a group stage and call it world cup of american football while you are at it.

In general this format awards the best team of the season and that should always be the mission of a championship. You should have a small playoff to eliminate any doubt and questions about strength of schedule and others BS, but not big enough to cause randomness like for example: Lawrence gets injured against a #16 seed and Clemson is fvcked because it has to play 2 more games or players leaving to get ready for the NFL draft,
I know it sucks to see the same 3 teams every year and a random #4, but the CFP (not perfect) system is fine, every year the #4 gets abused and even when there's legit controversy about who should be number #4 it most likely would be rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Maybe they could get rid of Conference Championship games and just award Conference Championships to the regular season winner.
So that is 5 automatic bids into the playoff.

Then have the Second place teams in each of the 5 Major Conferences plus 3 "best of the rest" play the last week of the season instead of those Conference championship games.
The 3 Highest ranked teams after those games make it into the playoff. Call it College Football Wildcard Saturday instead of Championship Saturday as currently labeled.

I think the lack of a possible Cinderella story in college football is lacking. I’m not talking about FIU winning a ship. I’m talking about maybe like an 8 team playoff and maybe cincy gets a shot. It’s what makes college basketball so cool. But it could never happen in football.

Yea 1-2 get byes and then 3-6 play. Why not give the #1-2 teams a benefit to being that highly ranked can do 5 power conference winners and the best group of 5 team of undefeated. I just think 8 would be too many teams
The problem I have with this, which is the problem I've always had with polls, is...who is 1 and 2?
Out of the 6 year history of the CFPO, they've gotten "the 2 best" only half of the time.
In 2018, 1 and 2 didn't even make it to the Championship game.

If you're going to go, gotta go 8.
Use the Bowls for the first round to see who goes to the "Final 4".

Keith Jackson used to say he wanted a plus -one system many years ago.

Go back to some of the old traditional Conference affiliations for bowl games, have them all played on New Year's Day.
Then a week after the Bowl Games have #1 play #2 on a neutral field.

Legitimate question to all the people who are in favor of expansion: Do you want to expand because you want to maximize a chance for Miami to eventually make it into a playoff game or do you truly want to see 8 other teams play every year instead of 4?
Personally if they went to 8 to have any interest at all whatsoever I would need for them to have simply conference winners make it including the current G5 with whatever realignment is needed. No interest in 4 loss #8 Bama playing 0 loss Ohio State or whatever. They barely have 2 decent games now with 4 teams as it is

AD's used to try to get the toughest schedule possible just so they could end up ranked higher with the same record as other teams. Now all anyone cares about is their division inside their conference. Can anyone say that hoping to skate through a weak division for a shot in the conference championship is more exciting than when you had to beat a tough schedule?

Like it.
Im thinking similarly with a "plus 2".

Good question. I think many people here want to see Miami make it in. I also think there are many people who just want to see more games that mean something because the current system has too many meaningless games.

I personally would want a Keith Jackson plus -one type of thing. I miss the days of waking up January 1st and watching a bunch of the bowl games with excitement and curiosity as to what was going to happen.

There is no incentive for the top 6 or so teams to play a challenging schedule, they hide behind the facade of their tough conference schedule.

I mean even with 8 it’s all subjective. I understand what ur saying me personally I would love 8 more big games more teams. But I’m just in the camp that they won’t to that

Because ESPN's college football product is mostly just about Ohio State/Alabama/Clemson/ND anyway?

Why invite in more teams when only a handful matter?

Every year # 4 gets destroyed in the first round of the playoffs. I do not see anybody 5 thru 8 especially #8 Georgia a serious contender to win it all. As far as Ohio st the committee should punish them they made their bed so let them lie in it. If Miami ends up #8 do you think they could win it all?
Maybe . Anything is possible. Id love for us to have a shot though.

I do not want to make a thread about this but BYU made a lot of people look very stupid today.
Way too many people around here were believing their hype and saying things like they should be favored by multiple TDs against Miami.

I think people have to realize that a team like that is all sizzle and no steak. And if it were not for a last second schedule of Coastal Carolina we would not have seen how bad they really are.

One More reason to not expand playoffs and allow non -Power 5 teams in it.

An 8 team playoff would be interesting just for this year

The top 4 teams are pretty clear

1. Bama
2. Clemson
3. Ohio State
4. ND

the next 4

5. UF
6. A&M
7. Cincy
8. Miami

would make for an interesting playoff. We’d prob get crushed by Bama this year though

The real problem is there are too many teams in division 1.

Division 1 should be four conferences of 16 teams each. Each conference has a championship game, and the four conference champions compete in a playoff to determine the national champion.

Teams like Cincinnati, BYU, and UCF can play for the lower tier, Division 2 championship
