The theory is that it's safer to kick the FG now on drive 1 then doing it at the very end of drive 2 where the clock could expire.

Made no sense. You needed onside anyway. Any recovery of an onsides and you're automatically within hail Mary range (and only 10 yards from FG range). Should have kept trying to score a TD there
