CFB Analytics Thread 2026-27

one of the ones I like looking which has a very high correlation to the NC race is QBR.

Going back to 2013, here is how each of the national title winners starting QBs (at least those who started for the majority of the season) finished in QBR:

2025: 3rd
2024: 1st
2023: 3rd
2022: 4th
2021: 3rd
2020: 1st
2019: 1st
2018: 8th
2017: 7th
2016: 5th
2015: 32nd
2014: 2nd
2013: 1st

Some context:
The ONLY major outlier was Jake Coker in 2015 during Derrick Henry’s Heisman year. The next “lowest” was 2018 Clemson with Trevor Lawrence and he didn’t start until several games into the season because they were still playing Kelly Bryant. In 2017 Jalen Hurts finished 7th before getting yanked in the NC game for Tua.

Basically, if you want to win a national title in the playoff era, your starting QB pretty much has to finish in the top 5 in QBR.

Everyone in the game thread was hating on Mensah and i even had a buddy say idc about his counting stats, he lost himself millions and he won’t go in the first round because of this performance lol

Here he is as the top QB in the country so far
Legit criticism is not hating. Mensah threw a ball in overtime where 2 FSU players almost picked it and ended the game, where he needed to throw it away. He was pressing

being best cfb qb and being top nfl prospect is not same thing. Scouts arent gonna like him but it doesnt really matter for us and in cfb context

Calling him soft for smiling is nonsense. You know who else i saw throw more half a dozen balls that could’ve been picked off by the defense? CJ Carr. Yall should watch the other teams sometimes lol. The #2 qb on this list cost his team the game w/ his inaccuracy all game and egregiously at the end by his misplaced pass

People were in there clamoring for Carson Beck which is fuggin hilarious given how people were still talking about his INT against IU during his preseason game

No one is in the same room as Mensash except Chambliss who is the best QB in CFB.

yeah i think this is completely divorced from reality. Scouts still have Arch manning as a first round quarterback this past week. The golden child everyone fawns over lost to Tulsa.

Who are they going to like better ? Austin Simmons ? lol. Saiyan? Stockton? Leavitt? Hoover? Scouts still like Sellers lol. The one guy who i think should be getting first round buzz but isn’t is Maiava. Connor Wiegman will start to get more buzz after his win over everybody’s golden child Mestemaker — who has 15 interceptions and eight fumbles in his last 19 games.

I do think CJ Carr is a first round qb but if were talking about almost interceptions, he had a half dozen of them against BYU

This was Mensah’s worst game as a Cane but it doesn’t invalidate his body of work. Both can be true.

There’s truth here.

Testaverde had miserable games in his two major bowl appearances. Didn’t stop him from being the no. 1 player selected in the draft and playing for 21 years in the NFL.

That being said, Mensah’s pro future is very much TBD.

Calling him soft is not legit criticism

This hopefully was our worst game of the season and we squeaked it out. Here’s to a cleaner game from Mensah and the pass defense from here on out.
