CBS Sports released an article listing the top-six Heisman Trophy dark horses, which named Hurricanes star Malachi Toney to the list.

This past season, Malachi was one of, if not, the best freshman wide receiver in the country. He reclassified and skipped his senior year of high school to enroll in college a year and a half early, and is already being named to the Heisman Trophy watch list.



During the 2025-26 college football season with the Hurricanes, Toney recorded a total of 1,211 receiving yards on 109 receptions, while scoring 10 touchdowns. Toney also averaged 11.1 per reception and rushed for 113 yards. Toney is one of the most electrifying players in all of college football.

If you ask the media, Toney is certainly not a dark horse to win the trophy; DraftKings released their odds to win the Heisman odds, naming him among the players in the running.

If he keeps making plays running the ball, tetunring the ball, throwing the ball (especially against, say, Notre Dame) in addition to the receiving it could happen…otherwise if he turns into more of a true receiver and is putting up monster #s I’d assume you have people voting Mensah splitting with him.

 

Not a chance in **** he wins a Heisman. He won’t get enough touches because of the talent level of Miami.

Last thing you need to worry about is Malachi getting touches. Go back 15 years in Dawson offense. The Y in this offense is the catalyst.

Restrepo had 155 touches, 2300 yards, 17 TDs in 2 years.

Then obviously Mali leading nation in catches last season.

Yeah and if he does that then Mensah is gonna be at like 4500

Wonder if we still use Mali on punt returns or try and protect him? He was so close to quite a few last year, it’s a matter of time

If his shoe size was half smaller and his teammates didn’t wanna watch him run, he would’ve had 3-4 lol

 

Toney has to be on Punt Returns imo. Hes beyond valuable there

 

Idk if there will be enough volume for Mali to make him a true heisman candidate. We have so many WRs and will rotate a lot more.

His actual best case is because he will be PR and wildcat... So he could get a lot of additional TDs or something, and be just the all around weapon that adds value to a heisman candidacy.

But like he will get fewer catches this yr because our WR core is so much stronger and more mouths to feed. Though we will pass more than last yr.... But I just think if Mali is close to the conversation, I'd assume Barkate is producing well, therefore Mensah is going to be the guy for it.... That's why Mali likely needs like 2 PR TDs, a couple Wildcat TD passes, and another 3+ Rush TDs or something....

I dont think Toney will have as many touches this season as he had last. I think the ball is going to be spread around a lot more this season. I think Heisman hype will die quickly as his numbers will be down year over year.
