When Miami quarterback Carson Beck faces Florida tonight, it will carry a little extra meaning. Years before becoming a star on the football field, Beck once planned to wear Gator colors—but for baseball.
Beck grew up in Jacksonville and shone in both football and baseball at Mandarin High School. As a freshman, he gave a verbal commitment to Florida to play baseball, a plan he later confirmed in interviews this week.
Here is a picture of him posing with a Florida coach.
But as his high school years went on, football became his main path. Beck eventually committed to Alabama for football, later switched to Georgia, and this year transferred to Miami to lead the Hurricanes, who are already 3-0.
Now, instead of taking the field in Gainesville, Beck will take the field in Miami Gardens to lead the Hurricanes against the very school he once thought he’d represent.
Kickoff is set for tonight at 7:30 eastern time, and Beck’s journey from a Florida baseball pledge to Miami’s starting quarterback makes this game even more special.
Beck is 2-0 all-time versus the Florida Gators.
