Canes Taking Steps To Retain Underclassmen

I can't see Joe Jax coming back. Hasn't had the dominate year I fully expected him to, but his physical gifts will make scouts drool. He'll get drafted relatively high and he knows it. Everyone else needs to come back though.

It’s frustrating enough that UM continues to lose juniors to the NFL while Clemson — the ACC’s gold standard — this season saw three potential top 15 draft picks (defensive tackles Dexter Lawrence and Christian Wilkins and defensive end Clelin Ferrell) bypass the NFL to return to school.

But this is even more exasperating: The Canes — during the past two years — lost three juniors who aren’t even on 53-man NFL rosters (Kendrick Norton, Joe Yearby and Brad Kaaya), another who was a fifth-round pick (Richard McIntosh Jr., who’s back on the Giants’ roster after missing most of the season with a thyroid issue) and a fourth-rounder (Mark Walton) who has 24 yards rushing on 13 carries in his rookie year for the Cincinnati Bengals.

All of this irks some UM people, but the Hurricanes don’t quite know what to do about it.

“Just because you’re the best player on Greentree [practice field] doesn’t mean you’re the best player in the nation or the dudes in the NFL,” Richt said on WQAM’s Hurricane Hotline. “Sometimes you need another year to develop and mature. Sometimes it is time to go. It’s person by person.
“The guys that are excited about leaving [to be a] fourth-, fifth-round draft pick kind of boggles my mind. But God bless them.”

Diaz points out that even though three top Clemson juniors returned to school, two others left early and were drafted very late.

“Same culture, same place,” Diaz said. “These are individual kids that make individual decisions. Our responsibility is to educate them to what they’re jumping into. We have done that with our guys this year so they can make the most educated decision possible.

If this doesn't prove that Clemson pays (as do all $EC schools) while we clearly do not, I don't know what else to say. We have talked about how much our recruiting is negatively impacted by down seasons yet schools like F$U and Florida can pull in top classes regardless. These schools have lower academic standards combined with PAYING ATHLETES. We are all delusional if we think this will change for UM. It ****es me off but it is what it is. I hope these kids all choose to stay but I am not going to criticize Joe Jackson for leaving when he isn't getting a dime to stay.

All 3 of those Clemson kids got paid big money to stay and those other two kids werent offered enough (if anything) to stay. Pretty simple.

There are a lot of good college players who will never do much in the NFL. Too bad a lot of juniors in that category don’t get it.

Good read. The only one mentioned who MIGHT be a 2nd or 3rd rounder is Joe Jackson. The rest need a serious reality check and should stay to complete their degrees. Especially if the NCAA is working towards eliminating that perk.
I think he needs to submit his name to that NFL College Advisory Committee. They provide feedback to prospective underclassmen to be either 1st round or 2nd round. If a player does not receive feedback for round 1 or 2, the committee thinks the player should go back to school. The dilemma is for guys who think they'll be a 3rd or 4th rounder and wind up 5th or worse.

If Coach Richt's brings in a top tier Offensive Coordinator, oline coach, and beefed up Miami's offensive analyst staff pool with quality former college coaches for next year than all of the juniors would come back and none of the underclassmen would transfer.

If the offense is humming along averaging 45pts per game, Miami's defense would be unreal.

Go Canes

Something that's not discussed much here is the fact that we're a fairly young team. Not making excuses for the current state, but it is reality. 26 seniors will be recognized Saturday, but many are not even on the 2 deep.

I can't recall who the poster was, but this person posted the 2 deep a couple of weeks ago in a thread and it was very revealing as to how young our roster is.

The person who seriously needs to think about leaving of all the juniors is Travis homer. We are going to have a loaded backfield and he might not be the featured back next year. Going to be hard to keep lingard and Davis off the field. Homer will test well for the combine, he really needs to think about it. If the other junior returns you already know they are starting.

He will make a roster off special teams value alone

Joe Jax: Earliest was a 2-3, consensus is 3-4.
Shaq: earliest 3, most at 4-5.
Pinckney: some thought 4-5, others had him 7-undrafted.
Homer: two had him 3-4, some others had him 5-6

Thanks for the reply broham. I wish you nothing but the best in your endeavours as an agent!

That industry needs more guys like you in charge.

Homer should go; everyone else should come back.

Homer is going to get passed up by Cam Davis at RB, they have short shelf lives, and he will absolutely have a long NFL career because of how outstanding he is on special teams, which is a prerequisite to sticking on a roster as a reserve player.
