Canes Overcome Hangover.. My thoughts on the UVA win...

Just read this. Nice work. Seems like I repeated some of the things you wrote ("Rosier is Rosier"). Funny stuff.

I want to re-watch the game on TV to see what some of you saw from Malek. "Roasted" is a strong word.

Lu, read your post(great read, as always) I wanted to ask you and some of the other gurus who have coached and played this game - is there such a thing as 'saving stuff' for bigger games? Going vanilla to the point that you dont make any adjustments to your opponent at hand so that you dont tip off future foes?

I ask this because geez, as you stated, there are some very rudimentary things that should've been done today with the way UVa attacked us offensively. And it's my opinion that Miami is still not there talent-wise across the board(like say from 2000-2003) where they can just give simple looks/fronts/plays, line up and just out-talent teams so routinely. LIke I believe in the future when they have a better Oline they will just run the ball with more physicality at will and then throw over the top. But for now, that isn't an option

Never been involved in anything close to these stakes, so I'm the wrong amateur to answer such a good question. I think we know a few things: this team can and has played all different styles, has done so effectively, and has sights on bigger things. We sometimes choose to gear down. Our coaches aren't stubborn loons like we've had in the past. So, I just accept there's a reason for everything they do. And, as an amateur hobbyist just appreciative of their product, sitting here discussing what they could be.

Couple things, if the FB package isn’t working (which it hasn’t) shelve it. Oline doesn’t get much push till late in home games for the most part. Teams aren’t going to wear down in colder climates.

This^^^. On one play, the FB just stood there and barely touched a UVA player. He's 240 lbs. Go hit someone when you're in there on a critical short yardage play.

It's easy to pick the play apart now, but I have no idea why a slow dude like that is expected to pull across the line and be effective. Play looked awful in design and execution.
I can’t really blame the walk on fullback. But I blame the starting Center for getting blown back which caused the pileup and negative play. But look alive Canes we got the win and we have Realus George at Fullback coming in this year.

Did anyone else not see PI on the first rosier pick? Thomas arm was held down and could not make a play on the ball.

Wanna know how bad a pi it was. Thomas still couldn't put his arm to ask for a p.i. the dam dB was still holding his arm

I saw it live then watched the replay in disbelief. Then I convinced myself it was not because not one mention of it by the broadcasters. I just don't understand why we can't get these calls.

Great summary, k9. Thank you.

The team is human after all, and following 2 elite, emotional efforts against VT and ND, I am not surprised we came out slow. You can talk up that risk until you're blue in the face, but it happens all the time in college football.

I think you have to give UVA credit. The energy that they came out with was palatable, and to some extent you knew you just had to withstand it. Their QB was like 18/19 to start the game. They hit us on some things that honestly, I was surprised others hadn't really been able to, but you give enough opponents a chance, eventually someone breaks through. Credit to their staff that was a great game plan, especially offensively. It would have been great to match that energy and hit back with a vengeance but it just wasn't going to happen.

Special teams is where I think the lack of depth really shows up. Hopefully with another recruiting class or two, the tide will turn and we can do better in the hidden yards department.

Please dear G-d, there has to be something we can do in the red zone to get Malik out of the pocket, Herndon involved, etc. I don't know, naked bootlegs, TE shovel passes, something to pop one in other than a QB draw.

As we sit here at 10-0 with an Orange Bowl appearance as our downside, I think you have to give a lot of credit to this staff. We've accomplished this with a QB that the HC himself never thought would play, our best WR hobbled, our starting RB out for the season, a full turnover of the secondary (or very near it), etc. Despite all that, they have us sitting undefeated. They've made it work. Heaven help this conference when they have the pieces they want 2 deep at all spots, but I don't want to really look ahead. 1) I take nothing for granted and 2) there is something about this team, I just get the feeling their best moment is still ahead of them...

It's great to be a Miami Hurricane

Simply, I still remember a UM team in 91 that won the title, having a huge letdown at BC after Wide Right I, against an Eagles team that was well below .500 in Coughlin's first year at Chestnut Hill. Barely scrapped by, in fact It happens. There's no other sport where emotion is so important quite like college football, IMO. You literally dont know what team you might get from week to week

- another note, Mike Harley's blocking continues to impress. Once again you see him downfield on big plays just battling defensive backs and paving the way for yardage. He really is one of those guys where the box-score wont necessarily tell you his value to a team

I keep telling all these Yeung people, you'll never figure out college football, it's an art as much as a science. Win big, win little, win ugly, win pretty, just win!

Anyone else notice scott patchen was back at DE. Saw he got some burn at the end of the game...also didn't see DJ Johnson at all or on the sideline. Did he get nicked up this week?

This plus the non calls on the holds plus the roughing on Joe Jack...awful

I have been saying McCloud isn't good for a minute now. He had a solid game against ND but dude needs to take a seat. He is only on the field because of the hype he came in with. I'm not trying to bash dude but he is awful.

Dude is stiff and can't turn his hips. He can only run in a straight line and seemingly can't stop himself. Draws terrible penalties. Takes poor angles and is an awful tackler. He can't cover and reads run and reverse plays painfully slow. This is why I've been hoping we'd stop using him and go more 4-2-5. I don't understand why Manny continues to put him out there to cover slots as well. Bandy, Carter, Smith can all do McCloud job better then McCloud can while adding more speed on the defense.

Fact is, I can't really think of what Hartley is good at. Can someone enlighten me?

Did you see that video from last week of him walking through the locker room before the ND game getting everyone fired up?

I thought he did that really, really well.

But for this Miami team, this is just business as usual and they finished with a flourish going on a 30-0 run to end the game. To me, this is just as impressive as the previous two games. To be able to overcome a letdown, a hot QB and an improved team that is well-coached by Bronco Mendenhall, and to show character and wear them down and out late, hey, I'll take it

It's that type of year. This isn't a great or complete UM squad but it has special qualities to it.

Survive and advance at this point.

Glad to get the W (15 straight). Survive and advance is what we're getting used to against teams like these. Next week could be the same.

- Short yardage/goal line running game is still bad and it wont get any better till next season. They simply can't get a push upfront and you see how they got stifled again in these situations.

It is atrocious. It isn't getting better this year but we should be able to do better.

- Rosier is Rosier. He giveth and he taketh. And he can giveth you a heart attack with some of the stuff he does. But he is resilient and he does just enough things to get the job done. But his accuracy simply wasn't there today and he got bailed out a few times by our WR's. He was 15-28 for 210 yards and had 3 TDs and 2 INT's. But every game he'll make plays with his legs that are key.

You take the good with the bad. Some of those throws/decisions are just bad.

- If Jaquan Johnson doesnt get All-American acclaim this will be a bigger robbery than Whitaker-Chavez. His pick-6 basically turned the game in Miami's favor. This is what big-time players do. Once again his tackling in the open field was top notch as he cleaned up a lot of plays

That play changed the game.

- Malek Young really struggled out there. Not much more needs to be said than that. And Zach McCloud, after a good week vs ND, struggled again in space. And that roughing the punter was an incredibly dumb play based on that situation.

The DBs really looked like crap out there for a large part of the game. McCloud made some big mistakes too. On top of that, Benkert looked like Brady out there. Then we got our pass rush going and things done changed.

- Overall the defense got sliced and diced but when they have a chance to play from ahead and the dawgs can hunt and come downhill it's a different unit. There aren't many lines that can hold off that pash rush late in games. Joe Jax and Toolboox were really dominant late as they closed it out. the Hoo's had some key drops but overall the second half that D closed the show allowing just one short-field TD after the punt block

UVA went from one of the most efficient offenses (in the first half) to the 96 Jets (in the second half). Benkert has a career day during the process.

- Offensively, mixed bag but I really liked what I saw of Dallas at running back. Is it just me or does he press the hole and cut up field better than Homer? But I think Deejay is a full-time RB moving forward, he just looks the part of one. As for Homer, when Miami tires out opponents he is a great closer with his speed and conditioning. Once again, after being throttled for much of the game, he broke another teams back with huge gashes.

Dallas needs to be all over the field. I wouldn't just stick him at RB.

As for Homer, the kid keeps chugging. You have to love that.

- Hey, survive and advance. Onto Pitt. Hasn't this been a fun season? (And honestly it's juuuust getting started)

Yup

DJ Dallas is a baller but come on, he doesn't press the hole and get upfield better than Homer. These are elite attributes for Homer and all the dude has done is make huge runs this season. Pump the breaks on DJ lets let him get comfortable playing RB

When he bit on the move by the receiver was pretty bad. The end of the half touchdown he got burnt too

Great work. This is the 83 team reborn, maybe better. I love the fact that they win every which way. They take the best the other team has to offer and win despite not playing their. When they do play their best it is bone crushing good like JJ's teams. I am impressed by the fact that it doesn't have to be our starters making all the big plays. Guys like Cager coming up big -- heck I forgot he was on the team. Mark will put anyone in there and Rosier will throw to them. This team is building tremendous depth with crucial big play when it matters experience not just junk time plays.

I agree that the crowd made a difference. We too are getting back to championship level OB quality crowds. Can't wait to be done with the chump change teams and get to Bama to set the world back on course.

Stop it, Pat Bethel is the worse player on D.

Don't team exchange game film for a certain number of latest games? If so, then not showing stuff ffor those games might have some value. I know old Jo Pa had to steal Johnie Mayors' game film from the Sugar Bowl against us to prepare for that horrible nightmare in the Fiesta Bowl. If was Mayor's defense psu used against us.
