Hangover's are tough to deal with - trust me, I've had a few. And that was clearly on display today at Hard Rock Stadium at high noon as our Hurricanes, coming off two highly emotional wins, dealt with one. It was almost predictable that UVa came out smoking behind Aaron Rodgers 2.0 and in both the first and second half of the game had two separate 14 point leads.
But for this Miami team, this is just business as usual and they finished with a flourish going on a 30-0 run to end the game. To me, this is just as impressive as the previous two games. To be able to overcome a letdown, a hot QB and an improved team that is well-coached by Bronco Mendenhall, and to show character and wear them down and out late, hey, I'll take it
It's that type of year. This isn't a great or complete UM squad but it has special qualities to it.
Survive and advance at this point.
A few things(which Im sure many others will touch on in more detail):
- Short yardage/goal line running game is still bad and it wont get any better till next season. They simply can't get a push upfront and you see how they got stifled again in these situations.
- Good to see Ahmonn Richards make some plays but I noticed that he had Braxton were not out there for long stretches in the 2nd half. It's clear that this is the (hobbled)version of Richards were going to see in the 2017 campaign.Hopefully the 3/4 weeks before the bowl game will get him significantly better.
- Rosier is Rosier. He giveth and he taketh. And he can giveth you a heart attack with some of the stuff he does. But he is resilient and he does just enough things to get the job done. But his accuracy simply wasn't there today and he got bailed out a few times by our WR's. He was 15-28 for 210 yards and had 3 TDs and 2 INT's. But every game he'll make plays with his legs that are key.
- If Jaquan Johnson doesnt get All-American acclaim this will be a bigger robbery than Whitaker-Chavez. His pick-6 basically turned the game in Miami's favor. This is what big-time players do. Once again his tackling in the open field was top notch as he cleaned up a lot of plays
- Malek Young really struggled out there. Not much more needs to be said than that. And Zach McCloud, after a good week vs ND, struggled again in space. And that roughing the punter was an incredibly dumb play based on that situation.
-Speaking of which, RJ McIntosh better get some post-season honors, also. His ability to 'get skinny' as Coach Kool teaches, and disrupt running plays is uncanny.
- Overall the defense got sliced and diced but when they have a chance to play from ahead and the dawgs can hunt and come downhill it's a different unit. There aren't many lines that can hold off that pash rush late in games. Joe Jax and Toolboox were really dominant late as they closed it out. the Hoo's had some key drops but overall the second half that D closed the show allowing just one short-field TD after the punt block
- Offensively, mixed bag but I really liked what I saw of Dallas at running back. Is it just me or does he press the hole and cut up field better than Homer? But I think Deejay is a full-time RB moving forward, he just looks the part of one. As for Homer, when Miami tires out opponents he is a great closer with his speed and conditioning. Once again, after being throttled for much of the game, he broke another teams back with huge gashes.
-Speaking of which, Richt understands what he has and while Miami may not wear out teams by pounding them upfront(as was mentioned before) they can empty their tank and make them capitulate by pushing the gas pedal and sticking with tempo late in games even with the lead. UVa collapsed defensively late as that SoFl humidity got to them
- Lawrence Cager once again made a play or two. Glad to see that he's kept at it and making contributions.
- Crowd was really a factor again. Yeah, may not have been a complete sell-out like last week but it was very good gathering for a noon game and you could hear the crowd and even the ABC announcers noted the atmosphere that was present. And the players absolutely play off of it
- Hey, survive and advance. Onto Pitt. Hasn't this been a fun season? (And honestly it's juuuust getting started)
