Canes Hoops Pre-Game: Texas Southern

I may have rushed to judgement on Kelly too, but I'm not going to crown him yet either. The story of the immortal Jamal "Rim Shaker" Johnson is fresh in mind. For those of you youngins, he was a freshman or JUCO (don't remember) 6-8/6-9 physical freak on what turned out to be our 0-18 Big East team. In non conference play he dominated everyone and almost broke the backboard 5-6 times with some Shaq type dunks. When Big East came around he disappeared. Like, literally. I don't think he played and wasn't even on the team the next year.

I have no personal investment in James Kelly, but just thought it was kind of silly to write the kid off after one game, especially since he had missed practice time right before (and also since he had 4 boards in 5 minutes, even if on offense it didn't look like he really knew what the **** we were doing). I'm also not going to "crown" him based on one very good game against a small OOC team. I will point out though that he seems to have a nice jump shot, and a quick release on the mid-range catch and shoot, which will translate better to tougher games than dunking - but I agree, he's not superman yet.

That being said, I think 17 points is the most that a former JUCO has scored for us since...Will Frisby had like, 18 against Maryland. And he did it in his third game. So it's nice that there is something to build on.
