What is "Strength of Record?" Usually they use a "strength of schedule" metric, is this the same?


Last night on ESPN they showed a strength of schedule that was not the same as this one.

I think the ACC is the best Conference in America and has been for the last few years.
That is a reason why we see teams that win this Conference go on to either play for the Championship or win it outright.

The media just loves to cling to the SEC narrative but they should be shifting it towards the Atlantic.

Reluctantly, I’m starting to agree with that statement. You can count me as one of those people who believed the SEC more than earned that label. The SEC still has the better athletes, in.my.opinion; but, they’re so horribly coached.

From a media standpoint, I’d stay with the SEC because there is more fans in the SEC than there are in the ACC. Again, in my opinion. Kind of not different than the 80s when ABC seemed to only play Big 10 football games. It’s where the fans are/were. But, I’d be blind not to recognize the relative competitiveness of BC, UVA, Wake, NCST, UNC, Syracuse, Pitt, Duke, GT and thankfully Miami to add to FSU, Louisville, VT and Clemson at this time. Quietly...the BIG 12 is showing really good across the board strength too.

The SEC has been exposed in a major way the last two Bowl seasons.

They will get exposed again this season.

Meanwhile...in a galaxy, far, far away...the network known as ESPN will continue to dishonesty hype them.

SEC = OVERRATED! Except for Bama and maybe Georgia.

First part, not to interesting because 0% chance that committee puts us in the top 4 in that scenario. OU/UGA/Clemson would be guaranteed. And most likely Alabama would be next. I wouldn't put it past them to put OSU #5 .

2nd part I agree with. Just win out and go into the playoffs as the 1 or 2 seed. Hopefully Bama loses just because I want to see that #1 by our name.

Strength of Record.

OSU is not on the list, so say they're at 35-40%.
That means that 35-40% of average Top-25 teams would have the same record as OSU with their schedule.
(An "average" Top-25 team is ranked around 15-20?)

Doesn't sound playoff-worthy to me.

SOR: Reflects chance that an average Top 25 team would have team's record or better, given the schedule.
SOS: Strength of schedule played, from perspective of an average FBS team.

They sound similar, but they are totally different metrics.

Strength of schedule seems based more on hard data - what is the combination of your opponents' won-loss records. However, the strength of record seems to be a quite subjective stat - who knows what the "average" top 25 team would do?

Our biggest mistake is not having any good losses.

If only we had a blowout loss to Iowa State or Syracuse.

Or even if we had two blowout losses to Oklahoma and Iowa.

Then the committee would be looking for ways to get us in.

Good, it’s basically saying that our record in relation to our SOS is number one in the nation.

Yes, it's a very good thing. The low percentage is meant to show how unlikely, i.e., how difficult, it would be for a team in the top 25 to achieve that record. Because we had the lowest percentage, it means we had the highest achievement. The percentage is saying that it our accomplishment was the very highest, because the odds were highest against any top 25 team winning out against that schedule.

In other words, we overcame the greatest odds. Rather than complaining about all the games where we play down to weaker opponents, our body of work, over an entire season, would be the most difficult, the most unexpected, and is rather the most overperforming of all the teams listed.

I hope I clarified this somewhat...I tried to say it many different ways. Just understand that we are not underachievers, but out-achieving everyone else. Take it to the bank. That's a tribute to a great coaching staff, a team that is together like glue, and a team collectively with such heart, desire and determination, that we just won't be denied. The more I think about it, and the more I think about where everybody thought, at the beginning of the season, we'd end up, how we outperformed everybody's expectations. I think this is one of the best seasons I've ever seen any team play---ever.
