I don’t know all the intricacies of modern day college football, but with NIL, the portal, etc..

Are you basically able to buy a championship now - go after all the elite talent with no free agency rules, no salary cap, no waiting to transfer?

For instance, a team could lure any player by just paying him more than anyone else after a good year. Will we be bidding for recruits even before they step on campus?

How long before players have contracts?

It’s like baseball with no waiting. How long before there’s a 100 million dollar collage football team? Is this possible?

The Dodgers just spent over $1 billion dollars. It’s insane.

Thanks for the insight!

No. It’s possible a team or two might “buy” a title, but it won’t be the norm. Just take a look at professional sports. There’s a long list of teams that thought they could just spend money and throw guys together and they’d win and it doesn’t work out.

pro sports have a salary cap (sans baseball), contracted players and a draft. Once the top guys hit free agency, the smaller market teams are out most of the time.

College football seems like they have no restrictions on someone just blatantly buying a team. Is that correct?

You've always been able to buy a championship. What do you think the SEC and a lot of the other powers were doing for years in recruiting? Think guys were choosing to spend 3-5 years in places like Athens, Georgia and Tuscaloosa, Alabama just because they liked the atmosphere? Of course not, the only difference is that now, we've learned that the old hundred dollar handshakes and Dodge Chargers were small fry in regards to the worth of these student athletes. Everyone can choose to spend, if they are so inclined and unlike in previous decades, where the rules were different based on who you were, the rules are the same now. Everyone has the same opportunity.

Yes, but that was all under the table and it’s different now. now you have the transfer portal and can be overt with everything - openly poaching proven players from other teams with no restrictions.

No contracts, no salary cap, no waiting - open free agency every year. You want Cam Ward? You pay him. That was never an option under the old system.

Back then, you could have more talent on your bench than most teams had on their entire rosters, if your payroll was large enough. Guys could transfer, but had to sit a year. It's open free agency now, but you also have to make sure the guys you have are happy as well. It isn't stacked in the favor of the school anymore, it's now more player friendly.

$100M? Seven years, and probably Texas.

Players already have contracts; they’re NIL. With the schools, I suppose it could be a commitment to go there for four years in exchange for four years guaranteed scholarship and an agreement not to transfer. That could allow a school to play “money ball” and load up on high upside 3 star players and build completely through recruiting.
