Dan, you're right. It's actually derived from the word Crouton. Several years ago, they served Caesar salads in the Michigan State war room on National Signing Day. Nick Saban, the head coach at the time, starting choking on a crouton and had to be administered the Heimlich. It was during this time that Cedric Irvin's letter of intent rolled off the fax machine. From then on, Nick Saban referred to the recruiting process as "Crouton", which later evolved into crootin'.
