Can the people who know ball more explain the second half to me?

I blame Dawson. You have to be able to adjust. Doing the same thing over and over has never ever worked. You can take an nfl team and play wake and only run those 2 plays and they won’t be successful. I don’t care if you roll out or do quick hitters, throw over the top, you fn do it. Spafford and Wingo are not easy covers. It’s was one stupid mfer being stubborn that almost lost us the game. He sucks. Runs trick plays when his qb is perfect and then runs the same two plays over and over and over again when the other team knows what’s coming and refuses to change. We need that reporter in Tenn questioning him today. I want to see that mfer cry explaining how he can’t make a mid game change when the game is on the line. How he almost lost this game.

They mixed it up a bunch. Showed 1 deep, dropped CBs into 3 deep shell. Towards the end, they played a ton of zone underneath and we didn’t have the time or players to get behind the zone as they were bringing extra guys.

No brown
No fletcher
Limited toney
OL couldn’t keep the footing(rained a ton before the game)

Jacobs was the guy that should have been running a go route but he ran more of a post into the safety.

just need to get healthy
 
I think it's the OL. When Brown and Fletcher went out I think he didn't trust the pass protection. Frankly that's probably the right move. Win the game without losing Mensah.

The good news is teams are going to copy exactly what Wake did to our OL so we have no choice but to improve and fix it.
 
Our QB, who had been playing perfect football, struggled. I don't think it's more complicated than that. Dawson called 12 passes in 15 plays on the 5 consecutive 3 & outs.
 
It was a bad second half and in game injuries are very challenging because of limited practice time for the new people.

But in the end UM still won by 13. Games like this happen in CFB. And we will likely have 2-3 more like this. And a few blowouts as well.

Let’s not forget that the greatest CFB ever only beat Boston College because of a fluky INT by a defensive tackle, and needed a dropped 2 point conversion to beat VT. Both road games against conference opponents.

After the Clemson game UM will have played 3 conference road games to start the conference season. That is a TERRIBLE conference schedule and only the ACC would ever do that to its best team. Then we have only 1 more conference road game, and only 2 road games the rest of the season. Beat Clemson and UM is in really good shape for the last 7 games.

Health is the main factor going forward but if we can make it to ND undefeated, I think a much healthier team will travel to South Bend.

Funny how Mensah did fine at Duke Without Toney. He somehow managed to throw for 4,000 yards. What happened in the 2nd half after Wake drove and cut our lead to 31-13 was the most despicable and disgusting display of cowardice and incompetence that I don't think I have ever seen before. Someone suggested that we were trying to avoid a critical turnover. By not putting the ball in the air for more than 5 yards???? When the QB is the Heisman frontrunner? When that same QB completed his first 24 passes?????? So Dawson can't run an offense against a team we are beating by 3 TDs with a heisman candidate who has completed over 90% of his passes this season if Malachi Toney is not in the game?????? Do they really expect us to believe that? What happened is that Mario and Dawson got so shook when Wake didn't roll over that they hid under the bleachers in fetal position desperately hoping that the game clock would just magically tick away. They are both gutless cowards who had no idea what to do when it became obvious that we couldn't just A gap life our way out of the stadium. No I'm not being a prisoner of the moment. I have given Mario plenty of praise and accolades when they were due. This however was so egregious that he deserves every bit of vitriol from the fans as he has justly earned it.
 
SIAP but Ferman from TOS posted last night that Miami was not happy with the conditions of the field. Noticed Mensah lose his footing in that throw to Lofton for the TD, back foot slipped away. Not saying this is the reason. But certainly fair point plus injuries. Get 65 off the field.
 
Don't know that I can follow with the same energy, but we've seen Mario and Dawson reign it in early before. They almost cost us the ND game last year. That should have been a two score game.

You realize we lost two games that we shouldnt have last year right? This ain’t the 2001 team. This is a coaching staff that ***** the bed. Dawsons second half is exactly what’s wrong with this team. If your worried about pass protection you run quick hitters or move the pocket. If your guys are not getting open get wingo and Spafford in there. If our oline sucks this bad for the rest of the year does that mean we never ever get another first down? It was blatant stubbornness that we have seen many times before. He doesn’t care if he loses. It’s what he wants to do right then and there or be damned. Those last 5 drives were most likely the worst 5 drives back to back in the history of Miami football and I’m not exaggerating. This **** went from the best to the worst without blinking an eye. He was out coached again. He watched his ol play like little girls and refused to bring in the freshman. He sent zero messages to those players while in game. He accepted **** play and returned it with **** coaching.

Honestly, I thought after last years backing into the playoffs Mario would push the scores to 50-60 any chance he had. IMO, he likely didn’t like the conditions, injuries, refs…and told Dawson to pull up the 2024 “where did the offense go” playbook.

I think Dawson inadvertently made it crystal clear that the IOL is a major weakness. Toney covered that up in the first 3 games with his ability to create instant separation. Barkate and others are great route runners, but they need a few moments to let their routes develop and the IOL is not giving any time on that. With RBs hurting, that also takes away the other bail out the IOL routinely needs. Because even with Toney and the RBs in, Mensah still getting touched up a bit on his releases.

I think you put your best resources at IOL and let Mensah climb the pocket if the edges get around the tackles. That would allow wrs to get open.

Lastly, we have to remember that Dawson’s offense revolves around the slot. A lot of his zone beaters are designed for Toney to have the most room to operate in.
 
When you get complacent and think the game is over at the half it causes injuries. The OL isn’t close to last season. To me we just wanted to get out of town as banged up as we were getting. The good news is that we traditionally usually lose games like this.

That was an excellent and very well thought out response to my post. You make some excellent points. However having your entire offensive output rely so heavily on one position is insane! Wake goes to man and our seemingly deep WR group can't do a thing? I understand that the IOL is getting gashed and that has a ton to do with it. The bottom line is that these issues must be addressed! Again. Great post.

Normally I’m not a fan of running your offense through one position, but Toney does force the defense to adjust so much for him that when the defense does clamp up on him, he opens things for others a split second earlier. So I get that… but

If he’s not in there, you can’t abandon the gameplan. We need to run many of the same plays with Upshaw or Spafford in there. But instead they are out there running nothing routes because Dawson wants to go with high percentage, low reward TE screens with who he thinks has the hot hand, not realizing the reason he had some big catches earlier was because of what he was doing with the slot earlier.
