Cam Ward Under Armour Deal

I’m an adamant Swoosh guy and I wouldn’t wear anything else sportswear wise but IMHO UA>Adidas.
Only cleats I would rock in school besides Vapor's or Speed TD's (Nike) were under armour branded. Best combination of affordability, performance and style in my opinion.

Same way they got Steph Curry. Not so much as outbidding, but Adidas and Nike lowballing. AA probably also offered Cam a seat at the table.
He wasn’t low balled.
They straight up fcked up.

anyone know how much the deal is worth?

1. UA is desperately trying to get back into the picture as a premier brand. Their market cap has taken a hit they’ve never thought would happen. For 7 straight yrs they’ve seen steep revenue decline, along w/ a drop in value of $55/share to now $5.50/share. Curry brand is not working like they thought, so having a #1 overall pick on the roster is strategic.

2. I told ya’ll what Adidas did, which is y it boggles my mind the few on this board trying to defend them. They completely ghosted Ward after they threw hella $$ to Hunter figuring he would be the Heisman winner.

3. Nike w/ Cam is a timing issue. First Cam signed a NIL w Adidas, & I told u guys Nike doesn’t do NILs w/ players signed w Adidas schools. Then, they took a huge market hit due to a certain guy’s propensity to **** off the trading world creating a chain reaction. So they had/have to be more judicious in the interim especially w/ some big time contracts coming up for renewal.

Idk if cam Ward can overcome the psychological impact of Nike.

He would have to 3peat superbowls and break all kind of records. In other words be like Mike.
The issue with ua is the fashion angle Nike has that transcends the actual sports.

People are getting married wearing AF1’s. Walking red carpets with them. Etc…

Maybe it’s a fad. Idk I ain’t that young anymore.
But Steph curry is the last player that changed the way the game is played. I know he didn’t personally change the game but he is the dude you point to if you ask why the game is not played the way it is.
But you can’t find anybody wearing his shoes.

So my issue with ua is what else are they doing besides signing players?
Do they have a performance lab? Are they doing anything in other sports like soccer or track?
Overtaking Nike is gonna take a monumental effort. I don’t think that signing a bunch pro bowlers or MVP’s is gonna make that much of a dent. It’s one thing to wear someone’s cleats or shoes on the court.
But to wear them to school and not get made fun of is another thing.

Nike has become a brand that’s synonymous with American culture, fashion, and sports.
No one has even been able to come up with slogan more recognizable than “just do it”.
Maybe McDonald’s with “I’m loving it”.
Adidas has “impossible is nothing”. But it’s a Mohammad Ali quote and not that original. And nobody recognize it as their slogan tbh.

It’s almost as if everyone else just folded and accepted Nike on top as the status quo.

Nike has some breathing room. But it’s really not in their nature to overlook somebody like Ward.
Or maybe we’re just wearing orange and green glasses.

My man, b4 UA can think about overtaking Nike, they must first catch Lululemon, Adidas, Puma, & Columbia my guy. Yeah, that’s how far off UA has fallen.

Under Armour made several fatal mistakes:

1. Jumped too far in the deep end of the ocean w/ Curry. UA made their name off of sports performance apparel (mind u, I have one of their original breathable undershirts that’s still in great shape today). They changed materials, & got into the footwear industry too quickly w/o consumer testing

2. That led to poor designs & poor performance shoes which hurt UA’s reputation

3. When they got into the sponsorship market in college, they were writing bad checks, assuming their forecast would remain on an incline. Unfortunately, they took another reputation hit by reneging off deal after deal

4. Curry shoes were hot for a quick second, but as mentioned in #2, his designs became memes, which hurt his branding & it never recovered

5. Players started complaining openly about cleats breaking on them & it became a global issue

6. Poor leadership due to **** poor financial reporting led to instability, creating a historic loss in evaluation.

Unfortunately, UA may be the story of Reebok, Fila, And1, DaDa & other sportswear companies that took or pushed for the #1 spot, but miscalculation after miscalculation created irreparable perception damage in which they never recovered. Plank is trying to rediscover the magic, so he’s throwing some Hail Marries. He has arguably the #1 WR in the game under fold, & now he has the presumptive #1 pick.

We’ll see if they can recover, but in my professional opinion I highly doubt it. In fact, most of their athletes have left after their initial contract. Curry has definitely changed the game, but he’s now getting flack for how the game is played. Also, unfortunately, his popularity is dwindling no fault of his own. Having a guy like D Fox carry on his brand is cool, but D Fox plays w Wemby now, & Wemby is 5x more popular than Fox, so Fox’s shoes r forgotten due to marketing/exposure.

So we’ll see if UA can turn it around, but it’s bleak.

Anyone who knows about Jordan going to Nike, or about Kobe, knows how poorly Adidas is run.

Adidas would have had both simply by trying. Losing out on Jordan maybe the single biggest ***** up in apparel history.
