Calvin Russell- only top 75 player to choose a dumpster fire

The fixation with the fixation is always weirder.

I Guess If You Say So GIF

I'm pretty much sure that the prespring strength and nutrition program freshman go through is massively important in preparing their bodies for the rigors of P4 college football, especially the SoFla kids who have gone without such benefits.

Did playing basketball increase his risk for injury? No.

Did not going through the football specific off-season program increase his risk for injury? Yes.
How do you know that?

Well I don't care to get into a discussion with everyone about the science of it, but countless studies have shown that kids that overwork their bodies in the same sport year round are at a higher risk to serious injuries like ACL and Achillies than athletes that play multiple sports year round and work their bodies and muscles in different ways.
Despite all that, injuring your Achillies in that way is a fluke injury that is rare. A few extra weeks of conditioning was not going to change that outcome for him.
A bigger concern would be his HS coaches and how hard they work him in practice because if they have babied him then his body is not ready for anything important. Based on how his recruitment went and some of the comments I heard from him and his family, and him not picking Miami most likely after watching how they practice I would assume that was more the case and more of a factor in what happened to him. Picking Cuse seemed to me like a kid that wants to be the man and not challenged in practice and less to do with the NIL number they threw at him.
Just my thoughts.
Yea you don’t pick a bad program like Syracuse over elite programs, if you’re a true competitor and want to push yourself to be the best.

I hope for Russell’s sake he has a multi year NIL contract, and that the university is unable to back out of the contract because of injury.

Every P4 football player should be required to put a portion of his NIL and rev share into a mandatory member-owned insurance company that covers a majority portion of their lost wages. I'm a hardcore capitalist. But these 17-24 year-olds are not experienced enough to do their own cost-benefit analysis. And I don't trust the programs to protect them. It should be mandatory.

I'd note a few things.

First, I do not think Cantwell is giving up shotput permanently. He may skip this year in favor of football, but he could easily go back to training for a possible spot on the Olympic team. Over 2 years before the Los Angeles Olympics.

Second, I expect that things will be changing in the future when it comes to our track team. We will be expanding our "Olympic sports" offerings and resources as we move towards Big Ten (or SEC) membership.
Good, I’ll start training my 5 year old to be on the UM gymnastics team lol all bs aside that would be nice at UM even SOFTBALL.

You could if it was a hometown team or a childhood favorite team or a coach that recruited you moves to there, etc.
But in his case, none of that happened. I agree with you.
