Call for Wider OL Splits & other random thoughts

Manny blew smoke about wanting an OC that was "cutting edge, and played fast, and innovative, and modern!"

Well, USC hired a Leach disciple and Air RAID proponent in Graham Harrell, a guy many of us had high on our list.

Manny hired a journeyman coach who runs a slow boring pro style offense.

And here we are.

and an slew of equally inept, green horn defensive coaches

You know who else has an offense line that uses super wide splits

Some forgetting that Manny got job in January and had to piece together a staff. I expect some changes at end of season although not much consolation right now. Enos needs to quit experimenting and start using what will work for this team. Baker needs to tear the D a new one...Rousseau should play more. They have 2 weeks to shore up this mess or lose to VT. Played like they didn’t give a ****.

I don't think any of them have a clue, especially our high school coaches on the defensive side

The source of the problem is the scheme.

You guys are going to drive yourselves insane trying to come up with a quick fix band-aid for this offense.

We are a Spread team with Spread personnel running a system that doesn't fit & doesn't work for us.
This is the real probkem!! We are an obsolete team running a scheme that is a gimmick. Spread is the new normal.

Seems like the scripted drives did well. Any reason not to have multiple drives scripted?

Teams adjust, but I agree you run what’s working till they stop it. If you recall we drove the ball really well on the 2nd drive, just went for it on a 4th & 4 and didn’t make it. Should have kicked a field goal.

LSU should be our model for offensive system. They were running a pro style system similar to ours but have now modernized their offense and now look phenomenal. No reason why we can't do the same thing. Maybe Enos can adjust but if not we need to go a different direction next year and find our version of Joe Brady.

I get why the offense is struggling - new starter, freshmen OL, new playbook, etc. that said, it’s more mind boggling how the defense is“struggling” especially since baker basically runs manny’s defense. I wasn’t sure about the offense going into the season but i was **** sure baker was going to implement/tweak an already aggressive defense. Now we see some elements of a donofrio defense - that’s the last thing I expected.

The donofrio elements are definitely there and it’s frightening tbh

I watched USC somewhat neutralize a Utah DL that is one of the best in the nation by using wide OL splits. Then I watched central Michigan - who had Zero sacks against Akron and 1 against Wisconsin - punish our OL all day long.

Both of our tackles are turnstiles. Zion is criminally slow getting out of his stance. He needs help and he isn’t getting it from chipping or scheme thus far.

Of course, wider splits won’t help if we insist on staying under center and being play-action centric. Ive commented on it several times in the pre season and since... with this OL, we have no business being play action centric. We need more quick hitting passes. It took Richt dropping 4 straight games before he let Kaaya start getting it out quickly from the gun. Enos is proving to be just as stubborn.

Jarren is completing 70% of his passes, and hits guys in stride on the slant better than most guys around the nation. This in spite of being constantly pressured. Dallas has great vision and lateral footwork and would do well against any additional pressure up the middle created by wider splits. We need to do something. It can’t hurt to try.

Some other thoughts before rewatching:

-Gurvan almost concussed someone. He is a better striker than FS. Or at least a better SS than FS. He should be battling for Carters minutes. They play the same way, only Gurv is more athletic. Please get Bolden out there immediately vs Va Tech.

-Our Lack of a pass rush is quizzical. Garvin lacks pass rush moves, but maybe that’s cause he spent the summer learning how to drop into coverage. GR15 creates havoc, even though we insist on playing him inside and basically giving up all his natural leverage. 94 looks like a player. I haven’t noticed our DTs make a single play all season.

-CBs need to hit the jugs machine and run a zillion gassers after that performance.

-Besides the one Hedley held too long and got blocked, he looks pretty good. Strong leg. Will only improve. Just hope that delay rollout right thing doesn’t get predictable. Beamer might be gone, but VT special teams are elite in my mind until I see with my own eyes that they aren’t.

-Our WR blocking was a significant advantage the past few years and has all but disappeared. Clearly this was more of an emphasis of the last staff, and one of the only things they did well. This OL needs all the help it can get, and the WRs aren’t contributing as much as they are capable of.

-The delayed blitzes don’t get home. It’s brought up every week. No need to say more.

-But I will say more: Blake Baker stinks and his defense looks just like D’No’s. The loss of JJ and company obviously hurts, but he ruined our aggressive, downhill defense. Manny needs to take playcalling duties back.

More after I rewatch.
well, blake sucks but lets be real, every good oc/hc with a good qb has tore manny apart since hes been here.

Coming into this game, Central Michigan was 107th in the nation in sack rate, and 115th in standard down sack rate (sacks on plays that down and distance would define as running downs). 115th is misleading, however - this tied for dead last in the nation because they had ZERO coming into this game.

That Jarren was sacked 4 times is a complete indictment on Enos. They couldn’t get to Akron but they got to us.

Jarren Williams (or his holding it a tick too long or his alleged lack of a deep ball) is not our problem. As I’ve been saying for about 4 years now, it’s the OL. And as I’ve been saying for the same 4 years, you can’t gimmick and scheme around it when you need tough yards, as evidenced by almost getting shut down again at the goal line. But you CAN help scheme against it between the 20s, and Enos isn’t doing that.

Sure you can.. one step drop goal line fades, back shoulder fades, slants, rub routes, TE seams, swing routes are simple ways to get it out quickly in the red zone. Do not need much time for those plays just line up and our athletes will ride

Who has improved on O? DJ, Jarren, and Gaynor? JT seems worse and slower...hasn’t caught for passes. Other WR are a wash. TEs seems the same. Donaldson is worse than when he arrived here.
