Caleb Herring - Edge from UTenn

This hopefully means that they have a lot of confidence in the young guys at edge. I have no problem bringing in rotational players in the portal, but would like to bring in a top edge in the portal but if the coaches think the young’s guys are capable by all means give them the starting jobs.

Not going to hate because of how well our staff dominated the portal last year especially with their evaluations. Thomas, Scott, Blay, O’Connor…. Do I need to keep going? Going to need edge rushers and bigger ones for sure. Not sure if Lightfoot will ever start considering his weight. I trust Taylor and as long as Heatherman is DC, I trust him.

Thomas was a really good evaluation. Although his transfer rating was a lot higher than his HS rating. So even outsiders viewed him as somebody who continued to excel upwards.

Scott was interesting because he was playing out of position the year going into his transfer year, which threw off his transfer portal rating. Apparently he had a pretty high PFF grade before that.

Blay and O’Connor I wouldn’t put as a great staff evaluations. Both had a 92 transfer rating on 247. They were viewed as college studs by everybody.

One factor I've not seen mentioned here is Thomas has to be supplying feedback (good or bad) on Herring to Heatherman, and JT.

Look man, I’ll give them the benefit but if you don’t like keeley then you shouldn’t like this kid. Dude disappears on tape and he was a starter I believe.
If the staff likes what they see and think they can work technique or a better scheme fit so be it

Keionte Scott and Jacobe Thomas weren’t exactly top 3 at their positions coming out either…

You’ve gotta project a little bit.., this staff has earned the right to pick their dudes

If you are going to get a high upside type player, why wouldn’t you go for Keeley instead of Herring. Maybe Keeley wants too much money. I don’t understand why we aren’t going for any elite portal edges, all of our targets seem like rotational players.

The Okie State kid was Big 12 frosh of the year and a top 200 player out of HS

All were highly coveted yes. But I would not say high end. But does this mean we should not sign a Cam Coleman? Isaac Brown? we should always expect to strike gold on mid-level talent? Because that is not sustainable. Yea last year some turned out well. Run it back to Meesh Powell, how did that turn out?
This is not the same defensive staff evaluating defense players. Also Meesh played out of position at Miami, he was a nickel that was forced to play safety because Miami had nothing else at that position. Who know what type of season he could have had if he was used properly.

Good UT players in the portal:
Caleb herring good DE
Ricky Gibson great CB
Peyton Lewis good RB
Lance heard good RT
Boo Carter great DB

Exhibit A

Please let these coaches sign the guys who they believe fit their system and stop chasing rankings. If it was up the CIS recruiting department Scott would have never been offered lol.

Portal rankings are extremely subjective. They factor in too much of the HS ranking imo. Remember guys like Cormani McClain were talked about as a top 10 portal prospect simple due to HS ranking. Wholeheartedly agree that we should not let them dictate our mood and be end all be all.

Just do the evaluations yourself and watch the film. Vaughn I’m 100% sold on, have been since Jax St days. Leavitt I’m bleh on but if Mario wants a game manager+ and a guy that can use his legs + is tough, then sure, let’s ride.
